Objectives
This module provides the link between the theoretical and general training delivered in the initial modules of the Master's Degree and the practical application that culminates in the Master's Thesis.
The course offers supervised practical training aimed at preparing students in a specific area of terrestrial ecology, biodiversity management, and conservation. The placement will focus on topics related to the management, conservation, and assessment of animal, plant, and fungal populations and communities, as well as ecosystems and protected natural areas.
Throughout this period, students will work under the supervision of an academic or professional mentor with the following objectives:
- To become integrated into a research group or professional team working in the relevant field.
- To become familiar with the scientific and technical literature related to the topic of their project.
- To develop the ability to identify and propose sound solutions to the scientific or technical challenges that may arise during the design of their Master's Thesis.
- To develop a comprehensive experimental or methodological design that will serve as the basis for their Master's Thesis.
- To plan the work in a coherent and realistic manner, according to the established timeline.
- To acquire and appropriately apply the methodologies, instruments, and quantitative tools required to carry out the project.
The placement may be undertaken at the facilities of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), as well as at research centres and institutions that collaborate directly or indirectly with the Master's programme, including CREAF, IRTA, CSIC institutes, and the Barcelona Provincial Council (Diputació de Barcelona). Placements may also be carried out in public or private companies, foundations, NGOs, or other public or private organisations whose activities are related to terrestrial ecology, biodiversity conservation, and natural resource management.

- Correctly use the methodologies needed to carry out the work.
- Participate in a research or working team in the field of biodiversity management or applications.
- Autonomously organise and carry out a study in the field of biodiversity, from the initial hypotheses to the detailed planning.

The practical training consists of activities directly related to the development of the Master's Thesis, which may include data collection, fieldwork, laboratory work, data processing and analysis, as well as the application of methodologies and techniques specific to the project's subject area.
The practical training will be carried out individually under the supervision of an academic or professional mentor, who will provide guidance on the practical activities, work planning, and overall progress of the project.
The preparation of the practical training report may, where appropriate, overlap with the development of the Master's Thesis, provided that both documents fulfil their respective objectives and assessment requirements.
Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
This course follows AI Model 2 (restricted use). The use of artificial intelligence tools is permitted only for support tasks, such as language editing, grammar and spelling revision, searching for non-specialized information, brainstorming, or programming assistance, provided that students critically review and validate all outputs.
The use of AI tools to generate, in whole or in part, assessment tasks without the explicit authorization of the teaching staff is not permitted. Students are fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and academic integrity of all submitted work and must acknowledge the use of AI whenever required by the course guidelines.

The assessment of the module is based on two components:
- Evaluation by the practical training supervisor (60%). The practical training supervisor, whether affiliated with the UAB or with a collaborating institution, company, or public organization, will assess the student's level of commitment, autonomy, learning capacity, achievement of the learning objectives, quality of the work carried out, and integration into the research group or professional team.
- Practical training report (40%). Students must submit a report that constitutes a first draft of their Master's Thesis. The document should follow the structure and writing style of a scientific paper, although it does not need to conform to the guidelines of any specific scientific journal.
The report must include, at a minimum, the following sections:
- Background (Introduction), including a concise review of the current state of knowledge, the research objectives, and, where appropriate, the study hypotheses.
- Materials and Methods, providing a clear description of the study design, the methodologies to be applied, and the data analysis strategy.
- Preliminary Results or Expected Results, depending on the stage of development of the project at the time of submission.
- References, presented according to a consistent scientific referencing style.
Particular attention will be paid to the scientific quality of the proposed study, the soundness of the methodology, the coherence between the objectives and the study design, the quality of the writing, and the appropriate use of the scientific literature.
Any irregularity committed during an assessment activity (including academic fraud, plagiarism, or the improper use of artificial intelligence, unless such use is explicitly authorized in the course guide) that may lead to a significant alteration of the assessment will result in a mark of 0 for that assessment activity. If the course guide establishes that obtaining a minimum mark in that assessment activity is a compulsory requirement to pass the course, or if multiple irregularities are detected in different assessment activities within the same course, the final grade for the course will be 0. In addition, the University may initiate disciplinary proceedings against any student who commits any of these irregularities.
