Prerequisites

Students are strongly advised to have a basic conceptual knowledge of ethics as well as of the main historical ethical currents.


Objectives

The aim of this module is to address key issues in applied ethics that form part of the current debates in our societies. For example: Who is responsible for climate change? What moral status do animals and nature have? Is animal experimentation ethically acceptable? What are the ethical implications of biotechnology for human enhancement? Is there a right to die and a duty to assist in dying? What are our duties towards future generations? What are the moral implications of the use of artificial intelligence in warfare?

This course will provide the necessary tools to unpack ethical questions, explore key concepts within the discipline and learn methodological guidelines for resolving moral dilemmas. Students will be able to analyse specific cases of applied ethics, construct philosophical arguments and defend different ethical positions, whilst appreciating the practical and social utility of ethics; in doing so, they will engage their own ways of thinking and evaluating.

Contents

Set out below is a list of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions may differ from this basic outline. A more detailed programme will be announced at the start of the course.


  1. Introduction. What is applied ethics?
  2. What is the ‘good’ life? What is a ‘good’ death? Ageing, euthanasia and a dignified death.
  3. Market ethics: living beings and the commodification of bodies.
  4. Transhumanism, genetic engineering and technologies for human ‘enhancement’.
  5. The moral status of non-human animals: scientific experimentation, genetic manipulation and animal exploitation.
  6. Environmental ethics, the climate crisis and future generations.
  7. The use of artificial intelligence in warfare.
  8. Pleasure and pain: Philosophy of drugs.

This course takes the form of a seminar and comprises theoretical explanations, classes with practical activities and tutorials.


The methodology consists of:

• A study of the main theoretical frameworks and issues in applied ethics.

• Discussion of texts and audiovisual material.

• Group critical debate on case studies.

• Independent work by students.

• Group work.

• Leading the seminar.

• Talks by experts.

• Supervision of individual work.


With regard to the theoretical component, the lecturer will present the topics and issues that students need to be familiar with in order to achieve the course’s objectives and learning outcomes. The practical component will be dedicated to students leading the seminar, presenting the readings (which they will have read in advance at home) and the key issues raised therein, leading to critical analysis and debate with the whole class. Where possible, experts on the topics covered will be invited to participate.

Students are strongly advised to keep up to date with the course and their reading, and to make use of the tutorial sessions.


Among the learning methods covered in the course, there is the possibility of applying the Service-Learning (ApS) methodology, provided the necessary resources are available and the pace of the course allows for it.


Annotation: within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

Assessment for this course is continuous and requires attendance at classes and regular engagement with the course material.


In order to ensure and assess the various competences, skills and knowledge that students are expected to acquire throughout the course, four assessment activities will be carried out:


  1. Class participation (20% – cannot be retaken)
  2. Leading the seminar (20% – cannot be retaken): Students must read the assigned texts in advance at home and will lead the seminar and discussion of these texts in class. A critical debate will be generated based on the concepts and texts studied, which will be taken into account in the assessment.
  3. Essay/written assignment (30%): Students will submit a written assignment following the lecturer’s guidelines, with a distinctly applied focus.
  4. Practical activity (30%)


This course does not have a single assessment. The evaluation is continuous.


In those situations where, in accordance with Article 264 of the Academic Regulations and the supporting documentation that justifies them, assessment activities scheduled for the first assessment period must be rescheduled, such activities shall be rescheduled and held on the same date as the assessment activity corresponding to the second assessment period of the course or, where applicable, during the resit assessment period.

If the circumstance affects an assessment activity scheduled for the second assessment period, the activity shall be rescheduled to the date established for the resit assessment period, without affecting the resit process established for the course.

In all cases, taking into account the specific circumstances, the Degree Coordination, in agreement with the Course Coordination, may determine an alternative date if deemed appropriate.


On carrying out each evaluation activity, the professor will inform students (on Moodle) of the procedures to be followed for reviewing all grades awarded, and the date on which such a review will take place.

In order to participate in the retaken, students must have been previously assessed in a set of activities, the weight of which is equivalent to a minimum of 2/3 of the total grade (CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT). To take part in the resit process, students must have achieved an average mark of at least 3.5 in the subject.

Students will obtain a Not assessed/Not submitted course grade unless they have submitted more than 30% of the assessment items.


NOTE:

In the event of a student committing any irregularity that may lead to a significant variation in the grade awarded to an assessment activity, the student will be given a zero for this activity, regardless of any disciplinary process that may take place. In the event of several irregularities in assessment activities of the same subject, the student will be given a zero as the final grade for this subject.


This subject allows the use of AI technologies exclusively for support tasks such as bibliographic searches, text correction or translations. Other specific situations may be contemplated, as deemed appropriate by the professor. The student must clearly (i) identify which parts have been generated using AI technology; (ii) specify the tools used; and (iii) include a critical reflection on how these have influenced the process and final outcome of the activity. Lack of transparency regarding the use of AI in the assessed activity will be considered academic dishonesty; the corresponding grade may be lowered, or the work may even be awarded a zero. In cases of greater infringement, more serious action may be taken.


Those activities that will show irregularities (plagiarims, incorrect use of Ia,...) are not susceptible to retake.
