Objectives
The general objective of this subject, which is a continuation of Translation Methodology, is that the students:
- are aware of the importance of context in translation
- are able to solve problems of contrastivity between the two working languages
Students will learn to apply the linguistic knowledge and skills acquired through the translation of non-specialised texts of all kinds in standard language (travel guides, journalistic articles, reports, etc.).
Work will be done on:
- Contextual aspects of translation equivalence
- Identification of the basic translation problems, as well as the errors derived from them, both in the comprehension phase and those affecting the expression of the target language
- Different translation techniques and the importance of the translation review and verification processes, to reach a finished product, including basic digital edition
- Documentation resources especially useful for translation from the first language, and the use of comparable and parallel texts to solve basic translation problems

Contents
- Context in translation (from the source text and the translation commission); the textual and contextual character of translation equivalence and how translation is conditioned by the context.
- Identification of contrastive difficulties and linguistic interference: differences in writing conventions (orthotypographic, lexical, morphosyntactic and textual). Problems of linguistic calc, false friends and literality.
- The understanding phase. Textual analysis (author, structure, register, tone, text typology, semantic field, etc.).
- The re-expression phase. Translation techniques and their application to solve basic translation problems.
- Basic bibliographic resources for the translation of non-specialised texts in standard language: monolingual and bilingual dictionaries of different types, grammars, style manuals, general search engines.
- Basic technological resources for the optimisation of editing and correction of texts.

The work students carry out mainly consists of:
- Translation tasks
- Translation exercises
- Debates and discussions (in class or online)

Guided activities: carried out according to a set timetable and in the presence of a lecturer.
Supervised activities: carried out under the supervision of a lecturer or tutor.
Independent study activities: carried out by students without supervision, requiring them to organise their own time and work (either in groups or individually).

Continuous Assessment
Assessment is continuous throughout the subject. Students must provide evidence of their progress by completing various tasks and tests. Task and test deadlines will be indicated in the course schedule on the first day of class. The information on assessment activities and their weighting is a guide. The subject lecturer will provide full information when teaching begins.
Types of assignments:
- Translation test: consists of the individual translation of a general text (or more than one text) from English into Catalan and may include a comment on the translation. The test is held in the classroom on the assigned date. The test (or a part of it) may be without online consultation resources.
- Individual translation: the translation must be delivered by the date indicated on the calendar. It will not be accepted after the set date.
- Group translation and class presentation: at the beginning of the course, the lecturer will organise the groups to carry out this translation and explain how it should be carried out. Individual translations are not accepted (unless for a justified reason). The translation must be delivered to the Virtual Campus on the date indicated in the schedule that the lecturer will provide to the students at the beginning of the course. Translations will not be accepted after the set date. After submitting the translation, the groups will present it to class on the date agreed with the lecturer.
- Presentation summaries: The student must summarise a presentation or talk on translation, which must be delivered before the day of the final exam. The summaries must be of proceedings whose content is related to the subject; otherwise, they will not be taken into account for the assessment.
Review
When publishing final grades prior to recording them on students' transcripts, the lecturer will provide written notification of a date and time for reviewing assessment activities. Students must arrange reviews in agreement with the lecturer.
Missed/failed assessment activities
Students may retake assessment activities they have failed or compensate for any they have missed, provided that those they have actually performed account for a minimum of 66.6% (two thirds) of the final grade for the subject and that they have a weighted average mark of at least 3.5. In case of retaking, the maximum grade will be 5 (Pass).
The lecturer will inform students in writing of the retake procedure involved when publishing final grades prior to recording them on transcripts. The lecturer may set one assignment per failed or missed assessment activity or a single assignment to cover a number of such activities. Under no circumstances may an assessment activity worth 100% of the final mark be retaken or compensated for.
In case of retaking, maximum grade will be 5 (Pass).
Classification as "not assessable"
In the event that the assessment activities a student has performed account for 25% or less of the final grade for the subject, their work will be classified as "not assessable" on their transcript.
Misconduct in assessment activities
Students who engage in misconduct (plagiarism, copying, personation, etc.) in an assessment activity will receive a mark of “0” for the activity in question. In the case of misconduct in more than one assessment activity, the student involved will be given a final mark of “0” for the subject. Assessment activities in which irregularities have occurred (e.g. plagiarism, copying, impersonation) are excluded from recovery.
Use of artificial intelligence
In this course, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies is not permitted at any stage of the assessment activities. Any work that includes AI-generated content will be considered a breach of academic integrity and will be graded a 0, regardless of any disciplinary proceedings that may be initiated.
Single assessment
This subject may be assessed under the single assessment system in accordance with the terms established in the academic regulations of the UAB and the assessment criteria of the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting.
Students must make an online request within the period established by the faculty and send a copy to the lecturer responsible for the subject, for the record.
Single assessment will be carried out in person on one day during week 16 or 17 of the semester. The Academic Management Office will publish the exact date and time on the faculty website.
On the day of the single assessment, teaching staff will ask the student for identification, which should be presented as a valid identification document with a recent photograph (student card, DNI/NIE or passport).
Single assessment activities
Single assessment will include three assessment activities (one of the assessment activities, or one part, is likely to be undertaken without online resources):
- Translation 1: 35%
- Translation 2: 35%
- Comment on the translations: 30%
