Prerequisites

Optional course of the Degree in Journalism. Students will need to have knowledge of current issues; demonstrate ability for the correct oral and written use of Catalan and Spanish and have knowledge of English. It must be clear that students will already have completed compulsory courses related to this area and that this will allow them to have the necessary technical skills for the proper development of the associate tasks for the course.

Objectives

The course aims to provide practical application of journalistic skills in multimedia content production and the set of organizational routines involved in the creation of journalistic products within a multiplatform production context.


It will address the specific features of newsrooms and the multiplatform production of a particular product, the transformation of the professional profile, and the emergence of new audiovisual languages.


The goal is for future journalists to be able to create, plan, manage, and produce multiplatform journalistic products. Both the materials and the dynamics of the course involve a high degree of practical and independent work.


The course will consist of a professional simulation in a real-world setting, based on the creation of a multiplatform media outlet associated with UABmèdia. Students will produce journalistic content across any platform. In addition, they will be able to make the necessary decisions, regardless of their position in the journalistic hierarchy or the type of media outlet they work in.


The course provides practical knowledge to understand the context of multiplatform journalistic production and its routines. The main objective is to equip students with the necessary skills for producing, directing, and creating journalistic products in all digital formats and platforms. The course will help students understand the context of new professional demands related to digital forms of expression.

Contents

Topic 1. Multiplatform journalistic production What is journalistic production? How is a multiplatform news product made? Qualities of the journalistic producer. Specific elements to newsrooms and multiplatform productions.


Topic 2. The process of multiplatform journalistic production. Organization of a multimedia writing. The professionals. Organization of a multimedia and multiplatform production team. Types and examples of good practices. New professions. Work routines. Leadership of a team of journalists. Planning as a basis for work and teamwork as a solution. Tasks of each person in a team. The selection of news and topics. Hierarchy. The final product. Selection strategies in digital products. The management of the participation of the readers and the use of the contributions of the readers. Integration of multiple formats in a multiplatform product. Data journalism and fact checking.


Topic 3. Journalistic production on the Internet. News production for platforms of general interest and for specific platforms. Articulation of a multimedia narration. Proper selection of formats and sources. Script and preproduction. Editing and production in different formats. Scenarios and journalistic environments in a digital and multiplatform context. In one of the sessions of the course, 15 minutes will be allocated for students to answer the surveys for the evaluation of teaching performance and the evaluation of the course or module.


The content of this subject will be sensitive to aspects related to the gender perspective.

The course consists exclusively of practical sessions in which students will work through the active learning methodologies of Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) and Authentic Learning. The practical component involves the creation and operation of a real-world multiplatform news outlet. During the first sessions, students will define the core concept of the project, establish the media outlet to be developed throughout the semester, and allocate the different roles within the editorial team.


Working autonomously, each team will determine its internal organisation, role distribution, editorial focus, and content strategy. Teams will include students with complementary profiles and responsibilities, including technical production, photography, audio and video recording and editing, creative and technical development, specialised reporting, and editorial leadership.


During the face-to-face sessions, each editorial team will be responsible for producing and publishing an integrated multiplatform journalistic product.


The course will also include several sessions devoted to activities other than content production, such as the discussion of best-practice case studies and conversations with professional journalists.


Throughout all production sessions, the teaching staff will provide both individual and group supervision and mentoring to support students in addressing technical, organisational, and management-related challenges.


During every session, the teaching staff will provide formative feedback on the work carried out by each team, based on the journalistic product presented.


Note: Fifteen minutes of one class session, within the timetable established by the Faculty or the degree programme, will be reserved for students to complete the institutional surveys evaluating both the teaching performance of the academic staff and the course or module.


Annotation: within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

The evaluation of the course will have five different sections:


A. Practice block I: 15% of the final grade for the course, in which the first block of integrated journalistic products will be produced and broadcast.

B. Practice block II: 20% of the final grade for the course, in which the second block of integrated journalistic products will be produced and broadcast.

C. Practice block III: 30% of the final grade for the course, in which the second block of integrated journalistic products will be produced and broadcast.

D. Multiplatform special: 20% of the final grade for the course, in which a joint special will be prepared and worked on continuously during the course, as the final practice of the subject.

E. Participation, punctuality, commitment, dedication and attendance: 15% of the final grade for the course that evaluates the individual performance of the students in relation to the listed aspects.



Practice Blocks:


The course aims at the practical application of multimedia journalistic skills and the set of organizational routines, aimed at the development of journalistic products in a context of multiplatform journalistic production. The practices will consist of a professional simulation in a real environment based on the creation of a multiplatform journalistic media. Students will produce journalistic products in any medium and will adopt different professional roles.


Each week an activity will be carried out in the journalistic newsroom created and which will be related to current journalism: news/reports/interviews/chronicles/debates/participation in UABmèdia/, etc. Also during the different weeks, students will have to assume a professional role: editor, director, cover manager, section head, editor, fact checker, copy editor, etc.


Each practice block will have a final and integrated evaluation for each student.


The subject, according to the academic calendar, includes laboratory practices to be carried out between sessions 3 and 16 of the course calendar. Its complete development will depend on the academic normality of the semester. All laboratory practices carried out are evaluable.


To pass this part of the subject, the maximum number of practices suspended or not presented (without justified excuse) is 1.




Multiplatform Special


In the last session of the course set on the calendar, the group will present a final integrated journalistic project that has 20% of the weight of the final grade for the subject. Of that 20%, 15% will consist of the prior production of the final special, developed throughout the course, and the remaining 5% will include the evaluation of the staging or execution of the special.




Participation:


As it has a high component of autonomy, the course's professors will especially value the attendance, punctuality, commitment and degree of activity (propositional attitude, interest, motivation) of the students during the course. The teaching staff will hold some sessions with guests (young professional journalists) who will explain their own experiences to the students.


The final grade for the subject will be the result of the sum of the different sections that make up the evaluation. A minimum grade is not necessary in each part of the subject to calculate the final grade.




Submission and review of grades


Every week, the professors team will provide feedback on the practical activities carried out orally and in groups. All reported grades may be reviewed, if the student so requests, in the in-person class session immediately following the grade report. The student must express to the professors his intention to review the grade inthat session and the teaching staff, in that same session, will attend to the requested review, ending the process.


The proposed teaching methodology and evaluation may undergo some modification depending on the restrictions on presence imposed, where appropriate, by the health authorities.


This course does not provide for a single-assessment system.



RECOVERY


The course practices are not recoverable. Nor can the final course project, nor the participation section. In the event that there is a case of recovery, the teaching staff will prepare a theoretical-practical test that will evaluate the competencies of the course.


The mandatory condition to be eligible to retake the subject is to have completed at least 2/3 of the total of the course practices and to have obtained an average grade equal to or greater than 3.5 (and less than 5) in the set of works carried out by the student.



Use of Artificial Intellingence

For this course, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies is permitted exclusively for trasnform and adapt the content previosly crete by students of the course. Students must clearly identify any parts generated with these technologies, specify the tools used, and include a critical reffection on how AI has inffuenced the process and final outcome of the assignment. Failure to disclose the use of AI in this assessed activity will be considered a breach of academic integrity and may result in a partial or total penalty to the assignment grade, or more serious sanctions in severe cases.


The performance of any irregularity in an evaluation act (academic fraud, plagiarism or improper use of AI, unless this use is expressly authorized by the teaching guide), which may lead to a significant variation in the grade, assumes that this act will be graded with a 0. In the event that the teaching guide foresees that in order to pass the subject it is an essential requirement to have obtained a minimum grade in this evaluation act or that there are several irregularities in the evaluation acts of the same subject, the final grade of this subject is 0. Apart from this, a disciplinary process may be instructed to the student that incurs any of these irregularities.


Any student suspected of submitting assignments that have been generated by AI, written by others or copied; include unattributed AI-generated content, or fall outside the permitted scope, may be asked to provide the preliminary work or other materials that can demonstrate it is original work and the result of their own authorship. They may also be asked to separately explain or justify their work. Teachers may also use AI detection systems or carry out any verification tasks they deem appropriate. If, after review, the instructor detects irregularities, the assignment may be graded zero, and the student may be subject to further disciplinary action.
