Objectives

To provide medical students with the intellectual resources of the humanities to appreciate and critique their future education, profession, and practice in medical science.


Based on a reasoned, critical, and well-founded historical understanding of current medical science and its practice, students will be equipped with tools to contextualize and situate the problems of medical systems, health, disease, and healthcare institutions within the present. Furthermore, students will approach the human being not as an object of organic study, but as a biopsychosocial entity immersed in ecological and sociocultural contexts, the primary developer and creator of medical science, which is in continuous co-evolution and construction.


The course is divided into three theoretical blocks: Medicine in History, Contemporary Medical Sciences, and Scientific Diversity-Social Entities. The purpose is to present the historical, social, and scientific perspective of medicine and humankind, in order to appreciate the modifications, alterations, impositions, and critiques that both human societies and medical practices have exerted on medical science. In this way, contemporary problems in medicine, health, and disease are discussed, developed, and complemented in the seminars and practical sessions of the course, with the aim of reasoning about and critiquing the sociocultural aspects (ethnicity, race, gender, sex, religion, language, politics, economics, etc.) that permeate the students' future practice and research.


Due to its characteristics, this course is scheduled in the first semester of the first year. Its objectives and content are complemented by those of the courses Clinical Practice I (PCA I) and Integrated Learning in Medicine I (AIM I).

Learning outcomes

  1. Describe the historical background of the healthcare professions from the perspective of medical pluralism.
  2. Evaluate the consequences for patients of the diversity in healthcare practice and professions.
  3. Explain the role of the healthcare professional as a critical and empathetic agent of social change, working for the health of the community.
  4. Explain the principles of telemedicine.
  5. Describe the historical factors determining the process of globalisation of health problems and international strategies on health.
  6. Detail the historical factors determining the shape of the various national health systems.
  7. Recognise health and illness as socially determined constructions that change over time.
  8. Recognise and distinguish the different medical traditions that make up the current health panorama.
  9. Identify the processes of professionalisation in the field of the health sciences and the tendency towards specialisation.
  10. Demonstrate a diachronic vision of healthcare institutions and the healthcare strategies implemented.
  11. Identify changes and continuities in the forms and contents of the medicalisation process.
  12. Define the factors determining healthcare transition in today's world.
  13. Understand medical science as knowledge in construction, subject to constant change, posing new challenges and opportunities.
  14. Identify the origins and the institutionalisation of scientific activity, and the epistemological bases of scientific thought in the health sciences.
  15. Recognise the scope and the limitations of scientific thought in the health sciences.
  16. Identify the various medical systems, including alternative medicine, and identify their founding principles.
  17. Make correct use of databases and works of reference (bibliographies, encyclopedias, and dictionaries) in the health sciences.
  18. Describe the dynamics of information in the health sciences through information retrieval systems.
  19. Maintain and sharpen one's professional competence, in particular by independently learning new material and techniques and by focusing on quality.
  20. Organise and plan time and workload in professional activity.
  21. Demonstrate, in professional activity, a perspective that is critical, creative and research-oriented.
  22. Formulate hypotheses and compile and critically assess information for problem-solving, using the scientific method.
  23. Demonstrate basic research skills.
  24. Communicate clearly, orally and in writing, with other professionals and the media.
  25. Use information and communication technologies in professional practice.

The assessment system for acquiring the competencies in this subject is organized into three modules, corresponding to the thematic blocks and teaching styles.


I. Theory: Written assessments using objective tests, multiple-choice items, and/or critical thinking exercises (50%). The assessment of the theoretical component of the subject is worth 5 points out of 10 of the overall grade and will be carried out through two exams: 1) a multiple-choice and critical thinking exam at the end of Block A, and 2) a short-answer essay exam at the end of Blocks B and C. Students must obtain at least 2.5 points on each of the two assessments, totaling 2.5 points of the overall grade for the theory section, to pass this section.


II. Practice: Written assessments using objective tests (10%). The assessment of the practical component (Block D) is worth 1 point out of 10 of the overall grade for the subject. Students must obtain at least 0.5 to pass this section. Attendance is mandatory.


III. Seminars: Assessment through case studies, problem-solving, and oral presentations (40%). The seminar assessment (blocks E and F) accounts for 4 out of 10 points of the overall course grade. Assessment will be based on participation in the seminar (Problem-Based Learning) and the completion and presentation of assignments. Students must obtain at least 2 points overall (1 point for each seminar) to pass this section. The final grade will be the sum of the points obtained. Attendance and teamwork are mandatory.


For the assessment to be valid, students must pass each of the different assessments separately.


At the time of each assessment activity, the instructor will inform students (via Moodle) of the procedure and date for grade review.


Those who have not passed the course may take a resit exam for thematic blocks A, B, and C (Theory). Resit exams for blocks D, E, and F (Seminars and PLAB) are not available due to their PBL and practical teaching methodology.


To participate in the resit exam, students must have previously been assessed on thematic blocks whose weighting represents at least two-thirds of the total course grade. Furthermore, to participate in the resit exam, students must have obtained at least a 3.5 in the overall course grade.


Students who do not take either the theoretical or practical assessments, thus exhausting their course enrollment rights, will be considered "Not Eligible for Assessment."


Any irregularity in an assessment (academic fraud, plagiarism, or misuse of AI, unless expressly authorized in the course syllabus) that could lead to a significant change in the grade will result in a grade of 0 for that assessment. If the course syllabus stipulates that obtaining a minimum grade in this assessment is a prerequisite for passing the course, or if multiple irregularities occur in the assessments of a course, the final grade for that course will be 0. Furthermore, disciplinary proceedings may be initiated against any student who commits any of these irregularities.


This course does not use a single assessment system.


Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Assessment


The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies is not permitted in any phase of this course. Any work that includes AI-generated components will be considered academic dishonesty and will result in a grade of 0, which cannot be retaken, or more severe penalties in serious cases.


Absences and Non-Attendance


Students may only justify their absence from seminar and/or practical sessions in cases of illness/disease with a medical certificate, and/or for work-related reasons.


Attendance at Seminar and PLAB sessions is mandatory. Absence will only be justified in cases of illness/disease, death of a family member, and/or work-related reasons, provided that the instructors are informed at the beginning of the practical sessions and/or seminars.


Advisory Sessions


Students must contact the professor to request a date and time for an advisory session at the History of Medicine Unit.
