Prerequisites

Students are recommended to have previously completed an introductory course in Spanish Phonetics and Phonology or to possess equivalent knowledge of the articulatory and acoustic description of speech sounds and of the phonological system of Spanish. Familiarity with basic phonetic analysis tools and proficiency in the use of computer resources for data processing will also be considered an asset.

As students have demonstrated, through the successful completion of the corresponding basic and compulsory courses, that they have acquired the fundamental competencies, they are expected to be able to express themselves correctly both orally and in writing. For this reason, spelling and expression errors will result in a reduction of the final grade (a deduction of 0.25 points per error in assessment activities).

All activities, practical assignments, and coursework submitted for this course must be original. Under no circumstances will total or partial plagiarism of materials published in any format be accepted. The submission of non-original material without proper acknowledgment of its source will automatically result in a failing grade (0).

Students are also expected to be familiar with the general conventions for presenting academic work. Nevertheless, they may be required to follow any specific guidelines established by the course instructor where deemed necessary.

Objectives

The general aim of this course is to equip students with the skills needed to apply phonetic knowledge to the analysis and resolution of real-world speech-related problems in a variety of professional contexts.

Specific objectives are:

  1. To apply phonetic and phonological knowledge to the analysis of authentic speech data.
  2. To use experimental methods for the collection, description, and interpretation of speech samples.
  3. To assess oral production in diverse contexts, including native speakers, learners of Spanish as a second language, individuals with speech disorders, and technological systems for spoken language processing.
  4. To understand the contributions of phonetics to professional fields such as language teaching, clinical phonetics, forensic phonetics, and speech technologies.
  5. To employ digital tools for phonetic analysis and the evaluation of spoken data.
  6. To develop a critical perspective on the concepts of linguistic norm, error, variation, and identity.
  7. To become familiar with current applications of phonetics in emerging areas related to generative artificial intelligence and accessibility.



Learning outcomes

  1. Use the appropriate terminology in the construction of an academic text and in the transmission of their knowledge.
  2. Use traditional sources to obtain, classify, interpret and analyse relevant data related to the study of Spanish language and literature.
  3. Use digital tools to obtain, classify, interpret and analyse relevant data related to the study of Spanish language and literature.
  4. Recognise acoustically and articulately the sounds and prosody of Spanish.
  5. Describe the phonological system of Spanish on the basis of the distribution, relationships and articulatory and acoustic properties of its elements.
  6. Acquire in-depth phonetic knowledge so that it can be applied to other interdisciplinary fields.
  7. Justify by means of appropriate terminology the analysis of data from a linguistic point of view.
  8. Propose new ways of measuring success or failure in the implementation of proposals or innovative ideas.

Contents

Block 1. Analytical Foundations: From Knowledge to the Use of Phonetics

Topic 1. Foundations of Applied Phonetics

Articulatory and acoustic characteristics of Spanish. Phonetic processes in Spanish: vowels and consonants.

The experimental method in phonetic analysis. Definition of research objectives and variables. Methods for obtaining and eliciting spoken corpora. Tools for phonetic analysis. Introduction to the statistical analysis of speech data.The Structure of a Research Paper in Phonetics.

Interdisciplinarity in applied phonetics.

Topic 2. Prosody, Discourse and Comprehensibility

Prosodic features from phonetic and phonological perspectives. Prosody and the construction of discourse meaning.

Comprehensibility and intelligibility. Plain language, easy-to-read language, and communicative accessibility.

Topic 3. Voice, Identity and Variation

Linguistic and social factors of variation. Social perception of accents. Linguistic identity and voice construction. Sociophonetic studies of Spanish.


Block 2. Applications: Analysis, Diagnosis and Modelling

Topic 4. Pronunciation: Variation and Intelligibility

The concepts of error and variation. Norm, usage, and dialectal diversity.

Pronunciation difficulties in native speakers. Pronunciation difficulties in learners of Spanish as a foreign and/or additional language.

Topic 5. Clinical Phonetics

Introduction to clinical phonetics. Functional and organic speech sound disorders.

Methods of phonetic analysis and assessment. Application of acoustic tools to diagnosis. Case studies.

Topic 6. Forensic Phonetics

Introduction to forensic phonetics. Voice identification and comparison. Questioned and known voice samples.

Methodologies for forensic speech analysis. Evaluation of evidence and forensic limitations. Case studies.

Topic 7. Speech Technologies and Generative Artificial Intelligence

Introduction to speech recognition and speech synthesis. The role of phonetics in the development and evaluation of speech systems.

Perceptual and acoustic evaluation of synthetic voices.

Accessibility, human–machine interaction, and inclusive technologies.

The course adopts an active methodology focused on problem-solving and the analysis of real-world cases.

Annotation: within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

Assessment

Assessment is continuous and focused on the practical application of content.

Practical 1. Applied project design (30%)

Individual work aimed at formulating a research or intervention question, defining objectives, selecting data, and proposing a methodology.

Practical 2. Partial development of the applied project (30%)

Individual or small-group work consisting of the application of a specific technique, analysis, or procedure related to the final project.

Final applied project and oral presentation (40%)

Individual or small-group work in which a study or intervention based on real speech data will be developed. The project will include: theoretical framework; objectives; methodology; data analysis; interpretation of results; conclusions. The project will be presented orally in a final session lasting approximately ten minutes.

To pass the course, students must demonstrate the acquisition of analytical and applied competencies in the field of phonetics.

Students will receive a “Not assessable” grade if they have not submitted more than 30% of the assessment activities.

Students who have completed or submitted more than 30% of the assessment activities will be graded according to the established weighting.

Regarding resits, students are eligible if they have previously completed two-thirds of the assessment activities. To be eligible, they must have obtained a weighted grade of at least 3.5.

Remarks

Regarding written expression, students are expected to produce coherent paragraphs and complete texts. Spelling, punctuation, and discourse structure errors will be penalised (-0.25 per error).

Students are expected to be familiar with the general rules for academic writing and submission.

Irregularities in assessment activities

If a student commits any irregularity that may lead to a significant change in the grade of an assessment task, that task will be graded as 0, regardless of any disciplinary procedure that may be initiated.

If multiple irregularities occur in the assessment activities of the same course, the final grade will be 0.

Activities involving irregularities (copying, improper use of AI, etc.) will not be eligible for resubmission.

Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies

The use of AI technologies is permitted in this course as part of the development of coursework, provided that the final output reflects a significant contribution from the student in terms of analysis and personal reflection. Students must:

(i) identify which parts were generated using AI;

(ii) specify the tools used;

(iii) include a critical reflection on how these tools influenced the process and the final outcome.

Failure to be transparent about the use of AI will be considered academic dishonesty and will result in a grade of 0 with no possibility of resubmission, or more severe sanctions in serious cases.

Assessment tasks and review procedure

At the beginning of the course, the methodology and assessment tasks will be explained. Later, specific guidelines will be provided. Detailed instructions, criteria, and deadlines will be available on the course virtual platform.

The review procedure will vary depending on the type of assessment and will be announced in due course.

Assessment schedule

The assessment schedule will be published during the first week of the course on the virtual platform.

Single assessment

Single assessment consists of a single assessment date, but not a single activity. It includes:

  • Applied project design (30%)
  • Partial development of the applied project (30%)
  • Final applied project and oral presentation (40%)

All activities will take place on a single day, which will be announced together with the assessment schedule during the first week of the course on the virtual platform.

The same resit system as for continuous assessment will apply.


Exchange students who request to take an exam earlier must provide the lecturer with an official written document from their home university justifying their request.
