Prerequisites
To take this course, students must have a command of Catalan and/or Spanish at level B2 or higher.
Objectives
This is an elective subject that can be taken in either the 3rd or 4th year and provides continuity to the subject Dynamics of Water, Energy, and Natural Resources..
The aim of the course is to give the basic knowledge so that the student understands the territorial, environmental and social complexity of the coastal system and learns to analyze the problems of the coastal space in an integrated way, with a geographical look and from a planning point of view.
The subject is divided into three parts or blocks: a first block analyzes the coastal space -in a broad geographical sense- from the physical point of view (evolution, dynamics, ecosystems) and social (settlements and human activities). The second block analyzes the manifestations of Global Change on the coast. The third block deals with the management and governance of coastal space (policies, legislation, instruments and inclusive governance).
A field trip is included in a section of the Catalan coast with the aim of being able to see in situ many of the aspects treated in theory.

The course content will be developed through the following activities:
- Follow-up of the topics covered in the course (reading and study of the materials that make up the course notes).
- In-class exercises.
- Reading of books and articles as complementary material to the lecture notes.
- Mandatory field trip, which will complement the theoretical knowledge from the course notes and will form the basis of the practical assignment for the course. The Faculty field trip protocol will apply during this activity. Students will be provided with specific safety documentation related to off-campus activities organized by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). It is the responsibility of each student to review and acknowledge this documentation prior to participating in any field activity.
- Preparation of a practical project, supervised by the teaching staff. This project will use a challenge-based learning methodology and must be presented orally in class.

The continuous assessment of the course will consist of:
- The completion of two exams that will assess the theoretical knowledge corresponding to the three thematic blocks of the course (which must be retaken in the final exam if a minimum grade of 4 out of 10 is not achieved in each of them).
- The preparation of a practical assignment, related both to the theoretical content and to the field trip.
- Attendance and participation in class activities and the field trip.
In any case, if the overall course grade is below 5, the student must take the resit exam.
Only exams are eligible for reassessment.
To be eligible for reassessment, students must have been previously assessed in activities representing at least two-thirds of the total course grade. Students will receive a “Not assessed” grade if they have submitted no evidence of learning or if their submissions account for up to one-third of the total grade. If this threshold is exceeded, the final grade can no longer be “Not assessed” and will be based on the submitted evidence.
Copying or plagiarism in assignments or exams constitutes academic misconduct and will be penalised with a grade of 0 for the activity. In case of recurrence, the entire course will be failed. “Copying” refers to reproducing all or a substantial part of another student’s work. “Plagiarism” consists of presenting all or part of another author’s text as one’s own without proper citation, whether in print or digital form. Any irregularity that may significantly affect the grade of an assessment activity will result in a grade of 0 for that activity, regardless of any disciplinary procedure that may be initiated. If multiple irregularities occur in the same course, the final grade will be 0. Copying in midterm exams will make them non-recoverable.
Professors may permit the restricted use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, exclusively for bibliographic or information searches, preliminary language revision, or translation tasks related to certain practical assignments. Since generative AI may produce errors or hallucinations, students remain fully responsible for all submitted work. Whenever AI use is explicitly authorised, students must:
- identify the sections generated using AI;
- specify the AI tools used; and
- include a critical reflection explaining how AI influenced both the working process and the final outcome.
Failure to disclose the use of AI will be considered academic misconduct and will result in a grade of 0 for the activity, with no possibility of reassessment, as well as potentially more severe disciplinary sanctions in serious cases. Any assessment in which fraud or improper use of AI is detected is not eligible for reassessment.
The maximum deadline for providing feedback and communicating the grades of the assessment activities is three weeks.
At the time of each assessment activity, the teaching staff will inform students, both in class and via the Virtual Campus, about the procedure and the date for grade review.
This course does not offer a single assessment system.
