Prerequisites
Students must be self-sufficient in the use of Geographic Information Systems and Excel for the creation of cartography and figures at user level. This knowledge will be taken for granted and will not be discussed in this subject.
To take this course, students must have a command of Catalan and/or Spanish at level B2 or higher.
Objectives
The purpose of this course is to provide students with a solid theoretical and methodological foundation in data design and visualization within the field of geography. It offers an introduction to this field using both open-source and proprietary software. The goal is not to achieve advanced mastery of specific software, but rather to understand the fundamental principles of information design and to know how to apply them in a critical and reflective manner. This course will cover:
- Techniques for the design and projection of spatial and urban planning.
- Cartographic and infographic representation techniques for data and processes.
- Computer-Aided Design (CAD) techniques.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to apply the acquired knowledge to practical situations, both in other subjects and in professional projects within the work environment.
This is a compulsory third-year course that is part of the "Methods and Techniques" subject area. It is closely linked to the course Spatial and Environmental Laboratory: Project, where the knowledge acquired will be put into practice through the development of an applied project. Furthermore, the techniques learned will be subsequently used in the course Urban Policies: Housing, Neighborhoods, and Transport.

The subject follows the teaching methodology known as \"flipped class\". Instead of following the traditional model of acquiring knowledge through lectures and then doing homework, the reverse class proposes to reverse this process. The teacher provides the students with the study materials so that they acquire the fundamental knowledge on their own. During the time in the classroom, the teacher focuses on practical activities, group discussions and problem solving so that students can clarify doubts and receive direct guidance from the teacher. This approach encourages the active participation of students, promotes critical thinking and the practical application of acquired knowledge.
Autonomous
Reading and study of materials and bibliography provided by the professor.
Supervised
Revision of manuals and tutorials of the software to be used for performing exercises.
Completing the practices started in class and applying the guidance provided by the teacher.
Directed
Performing practical exercises and classroom projects under the supervision of the teacher.
Part of the applied work for this course will be carried out in coordination with the project from the course Territorial and Environmental Laboratory: Project.

The course will be assessed based on the following pieces of evidence:
- Practical exercises, submitted throughout the course, which account for 50% of the final grade. Exercises must be submitted within the deadline established by the teaching staff. Late submissions will incur a penalty.
- Group project, which accounts for 30% of the final grade. This project cannot be retaken.
- Theoretical exam, which will account for the remaining 20% of the final grade.
To pass the subject, students must simultaneously meet the following three requirements:
a) Obtain a minimum grade of 5 out of 10 in the exam.
b) Obtain a minimum grade of 5 out of 10 in the group project.
c) Obtain a minimum grade of 5 out of 10 in the average of the practical exercises.
Scheduling of exams and submission of activities
Exam dates and assignment deadlines will be communicated with sufficient notice and will not be modified individually, except in justified and exceptional cases.
Exchange students (e.g., Erasmus) requesting to take an exam early must present an official justification issued by their home university.
The date of the resit/make-up exam will be set by the Faculty and cannot be changed.
Review of grades
The maximum period to provide feedback and communicate the grades of the assessment activities is three weeks.
Students may request a review of any grade through the established channels and within the period indicated by the teaching staff.
Resits
To be eligible for a resit, students must have been previously assessed in activities that account for at least two-thirds of the total final grade.
Eligible for a resit: the exam and the practical exercises, through alternative tests or assignments proposed by the teaching staff.
Not eligible for a resit: the final project.
Practical exercises can only be retaken if they have been previously submitted and assessed with a grade below 5.
No assessment activity in which an irregularity has been detected may be retaken.
Non-assessable students
Students will receive a grade of "Non-assessable" (No avaluable) if they have failed to submit more than 30% of the assessment activities.
Students who do not submit the final project or do not take the exam will also be considered "Non-assessable".
Plagiarism or fraudulent conduct
Any irregularity that could significantly affect the grade of an assessment activity will automatically result in a grade of 0 for that specific activity, regardless of any disciplinary proceedings that may be initiated.
If more than one irregularity is detected within the same subject, the final grade will be 0.
Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
The use of artificial intelligence technologies is authorized only as a support tool. Students are responsible for reviewing and validating any content generated with AI.
If structural, methodological, or conceptual errors attributable to the unsupervised use of AI are detected, it may be considered plagiarism or fraudulent conduct.
If the teaching staff deems it appropriate, the student may be required to identify the parts generated with AI, the tools used, and include a critical reflection on how these have influenced the process and the final result.
A lack of transparency in the use of these tools will be considered a breach of academic honesty and may lead to a penalty in the assignment's grade or, in severe cases, other sanctions in accordance with current regulations.
Single assessment
This subject does not offer the option of a single assessment.
