Prerequisites
Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of the place names and the location of the counties (comarques) and regions of Catalonia in order to learn—and develop the ability to learn—about various aspects of Catalan society, territory, and environment.
In addition, students are required to have at least a B2 level of proficiency in either Catalan or Spanish.
Basic knowledge of English and other Romance languages (French, Italian, and Portuguese) is also recommended, as it will enable students to read texts originally published in those languages.
In the case of late enrolment in the course (always for justified reasons), it is the student's responsibility to catch up as soon as possible on the classes and activities that have already taken place.
Objectives
The aim of this subject is to discuss different ways of understanding the relationship between human society, territory and environment in Catalonia through a variety of cartographic, textual and audio-visual interpretations. Through the observation and analysis of this geographical documentation, we propose to:
- develop scientific and constructive critical reasoning in relation to the territory of Catalonia;
- analyse some interrelations between the physical environment and human society in Catalonia;
- interpret some territorial distributions of people, activities and flows generated in Catalonia;
- assess the conditioning factors, impacts and environmental risks that derive from the relations between society and the environment in Catalonia;
- obtain a direct knowledge of some parts of Catalonia thanks to field trips;
- initiate and deepen the knowledge of some basic texts on the geography of Catalonia
- know some relevant maps and significant Earth observation images of the territory of Catalonia as well as audio-visual products.
For this subject, it is advisable to bear in mind the knowledge of all the compulsory subjects of the degree of Geography, Environment and Territorial Planning taken during the first academiic year and the first term of the second year.

Contents
The main contents that will be tackled are the following:
- The geographical context of Catalonia. The territorial organization of Catalonia
- The physical and environmental framework: relief and hydrography, climate and landscape, natural risks, protected areas
- Human population evolution: demo-geographic dynamics and structures, including migration, gender, age, class, nationality and status
- Human settlements and the urban system
- Rural and semi-rural Catalonia: from the Mediterranean tradition and agro-industry to current innovations
- The industrialisation and re-industrialisation of Catalonia: territorial origins, changes and permanences
- Tourism and its impact on the territory
- Socio-territorial and environmental conflicts, negotiations and pacts

In general, the course content will be developed through the following main activities:
- Following the topics covered throughout the course.
- Reading books, articles, and other materials.
- Practical exercises.
- Field trips and on-campus activities, together with the preparation of the corresponding reports.
- Discussion forums or oral presentations
This is a 100% face-to-face course, and students are expected to attend and participate responsibly both in the classroom and in any other locations designated by the teaching staff. In addition, students are expected to follow, read, and study the materials, announcements, and news posted on Moodle on a weekly basis (twice a week), as well as to take a proactive approach in searching for additional documentation relevant to the course.
Students must complete the required administrative procedures and preparations (for example, through the Safety Space of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities on the Virtual Campus, they must obtain the certificate required to participate in fieldwork). In addition, the teaching staff will explain the protocol of safety measures and good practices that all students must follow during field trips (see: https://www.uab.cat/doc/normes_practiques_fora_campus). The Faculty's Field Trip Protocol will apply to all field activities.
All assigned tasks will have a submission deadline that must be respected and will be announced by the teaching staff well in advance.
As this is a 100% face-to-face course, both consultations and tutorials (individual or group) will be conducted in person, either in the classroom during scheduled teaching hours or in the teaching staff's office during the office hours published on the Virtual Campus during the first week of classes. Communication by email or telephone will only be accepted in cases of force majeure or when specifically requested by the teaching staff.
Note: Fifteen minutes of one class session, within the timetable established by the Faculty or degree programme, will be reserved for students to complete the teaching performance and course evaluation surveys.

Continuous assessment is based on students' progress throughout the course. The teaching staff will evaluate students' steady and progressive development in three areas:
- Progressive improvement in the quality of the practical exercises and assignments completed during the semester, always with proper citation of the information sources used.
- Attendance and participation in classes and field trips, as this is a fully face-to-face course.
- Performance in written examinations.

To pass the continuous assessment system, students must obtain at least 4 out of 10 in each written examination. Any examination scored below 4 may have to be retaken during the official reassessment examination period established by the Faculty. Only written examinations are eligible for reassessment. At the time of each assessment activity, the teaching staff will inform students through Moodle of the grading review procedure and schedule.
All assignments must be submitted with great care and with almost flawless presentation. Every assessment must include proper in-text citation of all information and data sources, together with a complete bibliography. Students must clearly distinguish their own opinions from factual information or data, which must always be traceable and verifiable. The voices and images of teaching staff and students may not be recorded at any time or in any format without prior permission. Unauthorized recording may constitute a criminal offence and may also result in academic penalties.
Students must bring their national ID card (DNI/NIE), physical passport, or a printed UAB student card including a photograph. Written examinations must be completed using permanent ink pens (not pencil), and students are encouraged to bring pens of different colours (without a pencil case). During examinations, electronic devices, notes, or any other supporting materials should be put away from students (e.g. on the professor's table or on the floor). Hooded students can be asked to uncover their heads and then students must immediately do it. Glasses must be conventional (non-electronic) and should not be sunglasses. Students must arrive punctually for all assessment activities.
Assessment activities may be completed either in Catalan or Spanish, but the two languages must not be mixed. Marks may be deducted for spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, or language mixing.
If a practical activity takes place in the classroom or elsewhere on campus, attendance on that day is compulsory. Some activities may require students to bring specific materials (such as coloured pencils, markers, or erasers) or appropriate clothing and footwear for fieldwork.
Students requiring accommodations due to illness or other serious circumstances must provide an approved PIUNE report and/or an official medical certificate with a validated electronic signature in advance.
At the time of each assessment activity, the teaching staff will inform students, both in class and through the Virtual Campus, about the procedure and date for the in-person review of grades.
International and domestic exchange students: students requesting an early examination must submit, sufficiently in advance, an official document from their home institution justifying the request and including a validated electronic signature.
SINGLE ASSESSMENT
This course does not offer a single-assessment option.
REASSESSMENT
To be eligible for reassessment, students must have completed assessment activities accounting for at least two-thirds of the continuous assessment.
Students must have obtained a minimum overall average mark of 3.5 out of 10 before being eligible for reassessment, in accordance with Article 261.3 of the UAB Academic Regulation.
In this course, only written examinations are expected to be eligible for reassessment. However, each professor or lecturer can inform students about the reassessment procedure of his/her part, which assessment activities are eligible for reassessment, and under what conditions. This information would be published on the Virtual Campus. Certain activities may be excluded from reassessment if deemed non-recoverable by the professor or lecturer.
NOT ASSESSED
Students will receive the grade "Not Assessed" if they have not submitted assessment activities accounting for more than one-third of the final course grade.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
Copying or plagiarism in assignments, practical work, or examinations constitutes academic misconduct and will result in a grade of 0 for the relevant assessment. Repeated offences will result in failure of the entire course.
Copying refers to reproducing all or part of another student's or author's work. Plagiarism consists of presenting all or part of another author's work as one's own without proper acknowledgement, whether the source is printed or digital. Any irregularity that may significantly affect the assessment of an activity will result in a grade of 0 for that activity, with no possibility of reassessment, regardless of any disciplinary proceedings. If multiple irregularities occur within the same course, the final course grade will be 0.
Professors may permit the restricted use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, exclusively for bibliographic or information searches, preliminary language revision, or translation tasks related to certain practical assignments. Since generative AI may produce errors or hallucinations, students remain fully responsible for all submitted work. Whenever AI use is explicitly authorised, students must:
- identify the sections generated using AI;
- specify the AI tools used; and
- include a critical reflection explaining how AI influenced both the working process and the final outcome.
Failure to disclose the use of AI will be considered academic misconduct and will result in a grade of 0 for the activity, with no possibility of reassessment, as well as potentially more severe disciplinary sanctions in serious cases. Any assessment in which fraud or improper use of AI is detected is not eligible for reassessment.

Software
The usual computer programmes that will be used during this course will be the MICROSOFT Word, Excel and Power Point. In addition, the on-line platform Moodle will be used. PDF is the main format for submission of digital documents. In relation to social networks, in certain activities, X (Twitter) or Instagram can be used.
