The course combines lectures on the history, genres, and practices of photojournalism with seminars focusing on specific aspects of the profession and practical sessions aimed at developing the technical and narrative skills required for press photography. Regular attendance and active participation are essential for successfully completing the course. Students may have a maximum of three justified absences during the semester.

1. Lectures

The typical structure of each lecture will be:

• 1 hour and 15 minutes of lecture.
• 15-minute break.
• 1 hour and 15 minutes devoted to analysis, discussion, or practical application of the concepts covered.

2. Seminars

Seminars will combine theoretical input with applied activities:

• 30 minutes of introduction and contextualization.
• 120 minutes (including a break) devoted to practical exercises, case studies, or collaborative activities.

Depending on logistical arrangements, one seminar will take place at the UAB Communication Library and General Newspaper Archive, allowing students to become familiar with documentary resources and archives related to photojournalism.

3. Practical Sessions

Practical sessions will focus on the development of professional photographic skills and will generally follow this structure:

• 30 minutes introducing technical concepts.
• 120 minutes (including a break) of hands-on practice using students' own cameras or equipment provided by the Faculty.

The teaching methodology and assessment system may be subject to minor changes before the beginning of the semester.

A detailed schedule of course sessions will be presented on the first day of class and made available on the Virtual Campus, where students will also find descriptions of the activities, teaching materials, and all relevant information required to follow the course successfully.

The use of laptops, tablets, and mobile phones during class will be regulated by the instructor according to the learning activities planned for each session. Students are expected to bring note-taking materials (laptop, tablet, or paper and pen) and, whenever required, the photographic equipment needed for practical sessions.

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools is permitted as part of the learning process, provided that the final work demonstrates a substantial personal contribution in terms of analysis, interpretation, and critical reflection. Students must clearly identify any content generated with AI tools, specify the applications used, and include a brief critical reflection on how these tools influenced both the working process and the final outcome. Failure to disclose the use of AI will be considered a breach of academic integrity and may result in penalties or other disciplinary measures in accordance with University regulations.

Annotation: within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

This course does not offer the single assessment option.

• Assignments and activities (practical sessions and seminars): 40%
• Complete photojournalism project (planning, production, and editing, submitted in different stages throughout the semester): 40%
• Midterm examination: 20%

Students will be eligible for the resit assessment provided they have been assessed in activities accounting for at least two-thirds of the final course grade.

Grades may be reviewed during office hours by prior appointment with the instructor.

Any form of academic misconduct (including cheating, plagiarism, fraudulent use of Artificial Intelligence tools, impersonation, or similar offences) will result in a grade of 0, in accordance with University regulations.

Students who accumulate more than three unjustified absences during the semester will fail the course.
