Objectives

Objectives

The subject Human Psychology is taught in the first year of the Degree in Physiotherapy, within the preclinical training stage.

The general objective of the subject is to provide the student with the social bases of human behavior and basic knowledge in psychology and health that will allow them to establish and maintain a good relationship with patients, family members/caregivers and other professionals.

All these objectives must contribute to the student achieving a background of competencies that should enable a better understanding of the behavior of users of health systems, of their own behavior and of the relationship with the patient. 

 

Learning outcomes

  1. Explain the fundamental principles of evolutionary psychology and psychosocial development.
  2. Explain the learning theories to be applied in health education and in one's own ongoing learning process.
  3. Identify the psychological and physical problems deriving from gender violence.
  4. Explain the psychological and social factors that affect the state of health of an individual, a family, or a community.
  5. Identify the mental repercussions of physical injuries or illnesses in patients.
  6. Explain the psychological aspects of the physiotherapist-patient relationship.
  7. Explain the psychological factors affecting the biological organism in patients with psychosomatic disorders.
  8. Determine and explain the psychological aspects of the therapist-patient relationship.
  9. Explain and apply the theories of communication and interpersonal relationships.
  10. Express ideas fluently, coherently and correctly, both orally and in writing.
  11. Work in teams.

METHODOLOGY

Lectures, laboratory practical sessions and autonomous activities (individual study, bibliographic or documentary consultations, consultation of the Virtual Campus and Moodle). The assessable theoretical content will include the material explained during lectures and the materials worked on in practical sessions.

Restricted use of AI: "For this course, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies is permitted exclusively for support tasks, such as bibliographic or information searches, text correction, or translations. Students must clearly identify which parts have been generated using this technology, specify the tools employed, and include a critical reflection on how these tools have influenced their learning process. Lack of transparency in the use of AI in an assessable activity will be considered an academic integrity violation and may result in partial or total penalisation of the activity’s grade, or more severe sanctions in serious cases".

Annotation: within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

REQUIREMENTS TO PASS THE SUBJECT

The course is divided into two parts: a) A first theoretical part that includes the content corresponding to topics 1 to 8 and practical sessions 1 and 2; b) A second theoretical part that includes the content of topics 9 to 13 and practical session 3.

To pass the course, students must obtain a minimum grade of 5 in each of the two parts. Students will have two opportunities to pass each part: the first during the partial assessment sessions, and the second in the resit exam.

CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT

1. Mid‑term assessments Throughout the course, there will be two mid‑term assessments. The dates will be set by the Coordination Team of the Teaching Unit.

These assessments, if passed, will allow students to remove content from the resit exam. Each exam will result in an independent grade.

The questions will be in multiple‑choice format with five answer options and only one correct option.

The exam questions will be written in Catalan and Spanish.

A correction will be applied to discount random guessing: [Corrected score = (correct answers – (wrong answers/4))], which will be converted into a final grade ranging from 0 to 10.

The first mid‑term exam will include between 38 and 42 questions covering the contents of the First theoretical part (topics 1‑8) and practical sessions 1‑2 (PLABs 1‑2).

The second mid‑term exam will include between 23 and 27 questions covering the contents of the Second theoretical part (topics 9‑13) and practical session 3 (PLAB 3).

After each assessment, students will have a 24‑hour period to submit, through the Virtual Campus, duly justified claims, which will be reviewed by the lecturers before publishing the provisional grade list and scheduling the exam review session.


2. Participation in practical sessions During the PLAB sessions, three assessment activities (short questions) will be carried out so that students can demonstrate their participation in the teaching process of the course.


RESIT EXAM

Students who have not passed the mid‑term assessments may take a Resit Exam, which will be held on the date set by the Coordination Team of the Teaching Unit. The exam will consist of 2 parts: a) First theory partial + practical sessions 1‑2; b) Second theory partial + practical session 3.

Each student will only need to sit the part they did not pass in the mid‑term assessments. The characteristics of the exams, as well as the formula used to calculate the grade, will be the same as those applied in the mid‑term assessments.

After the exams, students will have a 24‑hour period to submit, through the Virtual Campus, duly justified claims, which will be reviewed by the teaching staff before publishing the provisional grade list and scheduling the exam review session.

Students who have not passed the course through the mid‑term assessments and who do not attend the resit exam for the parts not passed will be graded as “NOT ASSESSED”.

FINAL COURSE GRADE

Since the first mid‑term exam covers more hours and content than the second, the weight assigned to each exam in the calculation of the final grade is different. In addition, 15% of the final grade corresponds to the assessment of the short‑answer questions completed during the practical sessions. Therefore:


Final grade = (First mid‑term grade * 52%) + (Second mid‑term grade * 33%) + (grade from practical short‑answer questions * 15%).


This formula will only be applied if a grade of 5 has been obtained in both mid‑term exams of the course.

The final grade for students who have not passed one or both mid‑term exams after the Resit Exam will be:

  • If the grade resulting from applying the formula is ≤ 4.7, that grade will be recorded.
  • If the resulting grade is > 4.7, the final grade will be 4.7.


SINGLE ASSESSMENT

Students enrolled in the Single Assessment system will have ONE ASSESSMENT EXAM at the end of the course, coinciding with the Resit Exam for students following Continuous Assessment. This exam will have the same characteristics and will be graded in the same way as previously described.


This assessment will include:

(I) Two mid‑term assessments (2 partial exams), each of which must be passed with a grade ≥ 5.

(II) A test of 6‑8 short‑answer questions, corresponding to the 3 practical sessions (PLABs).


The final grade is calculated as follows:


Final grade = (First mid‑term grade * 52%) + (Second mid‑term grade * 33%) + (grade from PLAB short‑answer questions * 15%).

Resit Exam for students under the Single Assessment system


The Resit Exam for students who choose the Single Assessment system will consist of a short‑answer exam with 1 question for each theory topic and 1 question for each practical session (total: 16 short‑answer questions).


FINALLY

The commission of any irregularity during an assessment activity (academic fraud, plagiarism, or improper use of AI, unless such use is explicitly authorised in the course guide) that may lead to a significant alteration of the grade will result in that assessment being marked with a 0.

If the course guide specifies that obtaining a minimum grade in that assessment is an essential requirement to pass the course, or if multiple irregularities occur in the assessment activities of the same course, the final grade for that course will be 0.

In addition, a disciplinary procedure may be initiated for any student who engages in such irregularities.
