Prerequisites
To adquire the knowledge about of physio-pathological concepts and diagnostic techniques of the musculoskeletal system pathology.
Objectives
The subject is scheduled in the second year of the degree of physiotherapy and is part of the specific training. The knowledge of the musculoskeletal system pathology is crucial, as well as its basic medical and surgical treatments. The learning of physiotherapeutic applications in each pathology is also essential.
Learning outcomes
- Explain the physiopathology of the principal diseases that can be treated by physiotherapy and identify the symptoms that appear during the process.
- Enumerate the medico-surgical treatments, mainly in the area of physiotherapy and orthopaedics, that are used in the principal diseases that can be treated by physiotherapy.
- Analyse and synthesise.
- Identify situations in which a change or improvement is needed.
- Analyse a situation and identify its points for improvement.
- Propose new methods or well-founded alternative solutions.
- Weigh up the risks and opportunities of suggestions for improvement: one's own and those of others.
- Propose new ways to measure success or failure when implementing innovative proposals or ideas.
- Identify the social, economic and environmental implications of academic and professional activities within one?s own area of knowledge.
- Consider how gender stereotypes and roles impinge on the exercise of the profession.
- Weigh up the impact of any long- or short-term difficulty, harm or discrimination that could be caused to certain persons or groups by the actions or projects.
- Propose projects and actions in accordance with the principles of ethical responsibility and respect for fundamental rights, diversity and democratic values.
- Analyse the sex- or gender-based inequalities and the gender biases present in one's own area of knowledge.

Teaching is based on theoretical-practical classes.
For this course, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies is permitted exclusively for support tasks, such as literature and information searches, text proofreading, or translations. Any irregularity committed in an assessment activity (including academic fraud, plagiarism, or the improper use of AI, unless such use is expressly authorized in the course syllabus) that could lead to a significant alteration of the grade will result in that assessment being awarded a grade of 0.

Single Assessment
Students who apply through the established procedure may opt for the single assessment system. All assessment activities will be completed on the same date, and attendance at PLABs or any other teaching activities will not be mandatory.
The final grade will be calculated as the average of the written assessments (midterm examinations). Ninety-five percent (95%) of the final grade will correspond to the results of the multiple-choice written examinations, while 0–5% will correspond to the assessment of transversal competencies.
Assessment 1
This assessment covers topics 1 to 17 (inclusive) of the current course guide, as well as the corresponding seminars.
The examination consists of 20 multiple-choice questions, each with four possible answers and only one correct option.
Incorrect answers incur a penalty of 0.33 points.
A minimum score of 5/10 is required in order for the grade to be averaged with the remaining assessments.
Assessment 2
This assessment covers topics 18 to 34 (inclusive) of the current course guide, as well as the corresponding seminars.
The examination consists of 20 multiple-choice questions, each with four possible answers and only one correct option. Incorrect answers incur a penalty of 0.33 points. A minimum score of 5/10 is required in order for the grade to be averaged with the remaining assessments.
Course Assessment
Both the midterm examinations, the resit examination, and the single assessment may include content delivered in lectures and seminars.
First Midterm Examination
This examination assesses the content covered in topics 1 to 17 (inclusive) of the current course guide, as well as the seminars completed by all three class groups up to the examination date.
The examination consists of 20 multiple-choice questions, each with four possible answers and only one correct option.
Incorrect answers incur a penalty of 0.33 points.
A minimum score of 5/10 is required in order for the grade to be averaged with the remaining assessment components.
Second Midterm Examination
This examination assesses the content covered in topics 18 to 34 (inclusive) of the current course guide, as well as the seminars completed by all three class groups up to the examination date.
The examination consists of 20 multiple-choice questions, each with four possible answers and only one correct option.
Incorrect answers incur a penalty of 0.33 points.
A minimum score of 5/10 is required in order for the grade to be averaged with the remaining assessment components.
Grading System
In accordance with the UAB Assessment Regulations approved by the Governing Council on 17 November 2010, grades will be awarded as follows:
- 0.0–4.9: Fail
- 5.0–6.9: Pass
- 7.0–8.9: Good
- 9.0–10.0: Excellent
The course will be considered passed when the average mark of the two examinations is equal to or higher than 5.0.
Class Attendance
Attendance and participation in class provide added value to the learning process but are not requirements for passing the course.
Resit Examination
Students who have not obtained a minimum grade of 5 after completing the midterm examinations may sit a resit examination for the failed assessment component(s).
The examination date will be established by the UAB.
The examination will consist of multiple-choice questions with a single correct answer.
Incorrect answers will incur a penalty of 0.33 points.
“Not Assessed” Grade
In accordance with Section 9 of Article 266 of the UAB Academic Regulations, when a student has not provided sufficient assessment evidence, the course will be graded as “Not Assessed”.
A student will be considered “Not Assessed” if they have not completed a sufficient number of assessment activities or examinations to allow the evaluation of the competencies and learning outcomes established for the course.
