Prerequisites

It is recommended that students have completed the optional course in Anesthesiology (fourth year), which will teach them the basics of pathophysiology, pharmacology, and anesthesia to recognize and treat life-threatening situations. It is essential to maintain the confidentiality and professional secrecy of any data they may have access to in the course of their training, as well as to maintain a professional ethic in all their practices.

Objectives

At the end of the course the student must be able to:

1.- Identify and treat a severe acute patient by means of the ABCDE approach (Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, Exhibition).

2.- Identify and treat a patient with cardio respiratory arrest with automatic external defibrillation, instrumental material of the airway and urgent vascular access, pending the arrival of more assistance

3.- Ensure the permeability of the upper airway: disobstruction of foreign bodies, ventilation with face mask, placement of laryngeal mask, tracheal intubation, ventilation systems, use of supraglotic and infraglotic devices

Learning outcomes

  1. Enumerate the alarm signs that require urgent attention to the patient.
  2. Identify emergency situations and establish an order of priorities.
  3. Categorise emergency situations in accordance with the available indices of seriousness.
  4. Perform the initial assessment automatically and acknowledge the actions that require an immediate response.
  5. Estimate the risks and benefits of the various therapy options.
  6. Provide clear, comprehensible information on the therapy options to patients and their families.
  7. Choose a therapy option in accordance with available information and patient preference.
  8. Recognise when a patient is in the terminal phase and avoid therapeutic obstination.
  9. Identify all prophylactic measures to reduce indices of morbidity and mortality to the minimum.
  10. Gather information and select the most important facts about the patient, both in normal visits and emergencies.
  11. Transmit information clearly and accurately, leaving no room for possible misunderstandings.
  12. Establish rapport as the first important step in all medical procedures, both in elective and emergent situations and leave a written record of the information transmitted and the wishes of the patient.
  13. Identify the legal bases for creating, maintaining and using databases that contain medical information.
  14. Maintain and sharpen one's professional competence, in particular by independently learning new material and techniques and by focusing on quality.
  15. Convey knowledge and techniques to professionals working in other fields.
  16. Be able to work in an international context.
  17. Demonstrate, in professional activity, a perspective that is critical, creative and research-oriented.
  18. Formulate hypotheses and compile and critically assess information for problem-solving, using the scientific method.

  • Critical ill patient identification. Cardiac arrest prevention. In-hospital resuscitation. Non human factors and quality. ALS algorithm
  • Arrhythmia identification and treatment. AED and maqnual defibrillation technique. Drugs and access
  • Airway management, oxygenation and ventilation
  • Special circumstances in resuscitation
  • Post resuscitation care. Utstein registry. Ethics in resuscitation

  • Laboratory Practices: quality CPR, airway control, ventilation and oxygenation during CPR, arrhythmia identification and treatment. AED and manual defibrillation technic
  • Advanced clinical simulation with manikin: clinical scenarios in advanced life suport
  • Assistance clinical practices in ICU units

Students are expected to regularly access Campus virtual. Debate and forum activities are scheduled throughout the course.

In the current exceptional circumstances, at the discretion of the teachers and also depending on the resources available and the public health situation, some of the theoretical classes, practicals and seminars organized by the Teaching Units may be taught either in person or virtually.

Annotation: within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

The evaluation system will be based on attendance at theoretical classes (10%), attendance at skills and simulation practices (50%) and student evaluation during simulation and technical skills learning sessions (40%).


Given that the subject is fundamentally practical, students will be “NOT EVALUABLE” IF THEY HAVE NOT ATTENDED AT LEAST 70% OF THE SIMULATION AND SKILLS SESSIONS. Any retake test is excluded.


This subject does not provide for the single evaluation system. For this subject, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies is allowed exclusively in support tasks, such as bibliographic or information searches, text correction or translations. The student must clearly identify which parts have been generated with this technology, specify the tools used and include a critical reflection on how these have influenced the process and the final result of the activity. The lack of transparency in the use of AI in this assessable activity will be considered a lack of academic honesty and may lead to a partial or total penalty in the grade of the activity, or greater sanctions in serious cases.
