Objectives
This basic subject is located in the first year of the degree and it is part of a group of subjects aimed at learning the different basic psychological processes, which is composed of: Motivation and Emotion, Memory, Learning and Conditioning, Thinking and Language, and Attention and Perception.
The main aims of this subject are to:
- To describe the fundamental aspects of the psychological processes related to attention and perception.
- Ensure that at the end of the semester students will have acquired terminology and knowledge about the main research trends in these areas
- Identify the implications of attention and perception processes in some areas of daily life such as education, advertising, etc.
- Implement experimental tasks using different methodologies and procedures used in the research of these processes through practical lessons
Learning outcomes
- Identify the different theoretical focuses of the scientific study of attention and perception processes.
- Identify and describe the processes and phases involved in the codification of information.
- Describe the different sensorial modes for capturing information involved in its production and it bio-physical-neurological foundations.
- Distinguish the mechanisms of attentional processing.
- Identify evaluation methods for attention processes.
- Prepare and write reports based on the results of experiments on the processes of attention and perception.
- Organize experiments on human perception and attention, reasoning decisions made in their planning.
- Compare the results obtained in practice on attentional and / or perceptual and theoretical models relate processes.
- Apply knowledge of attentional and / or perceptual processes to solve everyday problems in which these processes are involved.
- Analyse scientific texts written in English.
- Use different ICTs for different purposes.
- Students must be capable of collecting and interpreting relevant data (usually within their area of study) in order to make statements that reflect social, scientific or ethical relevant issues.

The teaching methodology of the course is designed to foster student autonomy and critical thinking skills. Students are expected to adopt a proactive attitude in searching for and analyzing information related to current research in the psychology of attention and perception, sharing their findings and reflections within a collaborative learning environment.
To this end, students will participate in discussions, conduct small experiments, and present their work orally, promoting critical reflection and the practical application of course content. By the end of the course, they are expected to understand the relationship between attention, perception, and other cognitive processes, as well as their relevance in clinical, scientific, and applied contexts.
Whenever appropriate, course content will be approached from a gender perspective. Likewise, equal participation in all course activities will be encouraged throughout the semester.
The fundamental pillars of this methodology will be developed through the following activities:
1. Active classroom dynamics (theoretical classes)
- Dynamic sessions: During lectures, practical exercises, participatory activities, and discussions will be implemented to encourage students to interact and apply concepts of attention and perception, avoiding a methodology based solely on passive listening.
- Seminars: Students will take part in a lecture series consisting of five sessions distributed throughout the semester. Guest speakers and faculty may address current topics related to attention and perception, complementing the course syllabus.
2. Asynchronous theoretical preparation (independent work)
- Support materials: Students will have access, via the virtual campus, to texts and short audiovisual materials (with a maximum duration of five minutes) presenting the fundamental concepts of each topic. These resources will facilitate access to key theoretical content, although they will not replace attendance and participation in face-to-face sessions.
3. Applied project-based practice (practical sessions)
- Project-based work: Three research projects will be carried out, each developed over three practical sessions. These projects will involve information search, analysis, synthesis, and the preparation of presentations on different applied topics related to the course.
- Collaborative problem-solving: During these sessions, students will work collectively on concepts and problems related to the subject. Each project will conclude with an assessable group oral presentation (evidence EV3).
4. Regulated integration of new technologies (AI)
- In this course, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies is permitted as an integral part of the work process, provided that the final result reflects a significant contribution from the student in terms of analysis and personal reflection. Students must clearly identify which parts were generated using this technology, specify the tools employed, and include a critical reflection on how these tools influenced the process and the final outcome of the activity. Failure to be transparent about the use of AI will be considered a lack of academic integrity and may lead to a penalty on the activity's grade or more severe sanctions in serious cases.

General Assessment Criteria
To pass the course, the following academic requirements must be met:
- Condition to be assessable: The student must submit learning evidences accounting for a weight equal to or greater than 4 points (40%).
- Condition to pass: A weighted final grade of 5 points or higher (out of 10) is required. For this weighting to be applied, it is strictly required to pass the theory part, obtaining a score of 4 points or higher independently in both the Attention exam (EV1) and the Perception exam (EV2).
- Weighting of practical sessions (EV3): The grade obtained in the practical sessions (EV3) will only be added to the final grade if the minimum of 4 points is achieved in both theory exams. If the grade for EV1 or EV2 is below 4 and the assessment requirements allow it, the student must take the reassessment exam for the failed evidence. If there is no reassessment option (or if it is not passed), the course will be failed, and the final grade will directly be the average of EV1 and EV2 (without adding EV3).
- Students on 2nd or subsequent enrollments: Assessment through a single, non-reassessable synthesis test is not provided.

*Clarification: To be able to add the EV3 grade and pass the course under the single assessment model, a minimum of 4 points must also be obtained independently in each of the two theory parts (Attention and Perception).
Complementary Reassessment Test
At the end of the semester, a reassessment test will be scheduled for both the continuous and single assessment models.
- Requirements to sit the exam: Students must have been assessed in a set of activities whose weight is equivalent to a minimum of 2/3 of the total course grade (at least 2 out of the 3 evidences). Additionally, the student must meet one of these two conditions: not having achieved the minimum of 4 points in EV1 or EV2, or having a final continuous assessment grade between 3 and 4.9 points.
- Format and Duration: EV1, EV2, and/or EV3 can be reassessed.
- To reassess a single theory evidence (EV1 or EV2), the exam will consist of 30 multiple-choice questions, and the time allowed will be 1 hour.
- To reassess both theory evidences (EV1 and EV2), the exam will consist of 60 multiple-choice questions, and the time allowed will be 2 hours.
- To reassess EV3, open-ended (essay) questions will be included. The time allowed for the open-ended questions will be 20 minutes.
- Grading: The grade obtained in the reassessment will replace the original one in the calculation of the course grade. However, the maximum final course grade that can be obtained after reassessment is 5 points.
