Objectives

  • To acquire work and professional experience in the fields of scientific, technical, and medical heritage, scientific communication, and cultural management.
  • To obtain tools for the labor market, particularly in cultural and museum institutions, communication offices of scientific institutions, media, and cooperative business and associations committed to ecosocial justice.
  • To understand the historical and present relationships between science and society, in particular concerning gender, coloniality, and the environment.
  • To apply the knowledge, conceptual frameworks, and perspectives acquired in the master's program to professional activities in these fields.

Contents

How can the conceptual frameworks and tools of the history of science be applied across a wide range of professional settings? Which communication and cultural management skills can be highly valued in the workplace, beyond or within the academia? The Professional Practicum provides the student with a highly valuable hands-on experience in the professional world. Through direct participation in professional work teams at renowned institutions, companies, or associations, these internships serve as a bridge to a future career. Some of the main areas of the interships include cultural and museum management; the documentation and preservation of scientific and technical heritage; the management of archival systems and documentary access tools; science communication and scientific journalism; the production of web and educational resources; and the design of projects and activities aimed at promoting social debate about science, technology, and medicine.

The experience gained and the results produced during the interships can be used in the design and development of the Master's dissertation. In turn, as a truly complement to the master's curriculum as a whole, these internships allow the students to apply the theoretical tools and perspectives developed in other courses, especially in “Scientific Heritage and Communication.”

The Professional Practicum takes approximately seven weeks during the second semester, between February and May, at a rate of approximately, of 4 hours per day or 20 hours per week (which must correspond to 138 supervised hours at the entity and 12 supervised and directed hours by the course coordinator(s), with 100% attendance). Students have the status of interns through a UAB educational cooperation agreement with partner institutions (with the possibility of remuneration, if provided by the institution and agreed upon in advance).

The internships involve students in practical learning processes, such as: the documentation, management, analysis, access, and communication of collections, archives,spaces and technoscientific heritage; the writing, editing, analysis, and dissemination of scientific and technological content; and the management of educational activities and research projects in cultural entities, scientific institutions, and various associations. The internship may involve carrying out ongoing projects and programs during the specified period, so that they constitute a real contribution (eventually addressing real needs of an entity or community through Service-Learning methodologies).

A member from the hosting entity will be responsible for supervising the students' internships, serving as the external tutor. Likewise, a member of the master's program or of the universities/institutions coordinating or participating in the program will monitor the internships to ensure their articulation with the master's general objectives and the master's final project of the student, serving as the internal tutor.

In addition to the placements at the entities, this course offers specific welcoming, orientation, monitoring, and closing sessions, which take place in both the first and second semesters.

Annotation: within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

  • External Internship Supervision Report (30%)

The tasks performed by the student will be evaluated based on their rigor, commitment, responsibility, results, and ability to work individually and as part of a team at the collaborating organization during the internship. This evaluation will be conducted by the external supervisor.

  • Written Exercice (40%)

Students will produce a report on the activities carried out during the internship, under the supervision of the internal tutor. The document will combine a compilation of the activities and tasks carried out during the internship with a reflective, theoretical, and historiographical exercise. The document may include an initial state-of-the-art overview of the topic, sources, or issues addressed. Complementarily, appendices may be added to show the results produced (for example, databases, web entries, communication texts, etc.). The ability to rigorously articulate the practicum with the general and specific content of the master's program will be of special interest and highly valuable. This exercise will be evaluated by the internal tutor.

  • Oral presentation (30%)

A research project will be developed and presented (in a joint session with the other participants), based on the objects of study, activities, and results of the practicum and framed with the master's program main learning goals. Specific instructions are provided in the follow-up sessions. The oral presentation is evaluated by the course coordinator.

This subject allows the use of AI technologies exclusively for support tasks such as [***bibliographic or content-based searches, text correction or translations, where applicable]. In the case of subjects in a Modern Languages degree, use of translation must be specifically authorised by the teacher. Other specific situations may be contemplated, as deemed appropriate by the teacher. The student must clearly (i) identify which parts have been generated using AI technology; (ii) specify the tools used; and (iii) include a critical reflection on how these have influenced the process and final outcome of the activity. Lack of transparency regarding the use of AI in the assessed activity will be considered academic dishonesty; the corresponding grade may be lowered, or the work may even be awarded a zero. In cases of greater infringement, more serious action may be taken.
