Prerequisites
This is an advanced course for graduate students in in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biomedicine, Genetics, Microbiology, as well as graduates in Medicine and Veterinary.
A comprehensive understanding of Molecular Cell Biology is highly recommended.
Specific interest in the subject. Commitment active and dynamic students.
High level of English is mandatory (Understanding, spoken writing).
Objectives
Providing advanced training on the molecular mechanisms involved in signal transduction pathways and in the control of cell proliferation, and how these mechanisms are altered in the cancer cell.
Reviewing and updating key concepts of the field.
Defining our current knowledge on the field, as well as identifying critical issues to be investigated.

REQUIEREMENTS FOR ASSESSMENT
Given the highly interactive nature of this module, maintaining at least 80% attendance at in-person sessions is mandatory to remain eligible for continuous assessment. Occasional absences (up to the 20% limit) must be formally reported. Exceeding this 20% threshold, whether excused or unexcused, will automatically result in a grade of 'Not Assessable'. See below for further details.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
The final grade for the module will be obtained from:
- Active participation: Interaction during classes and seminars by directing questions and comments.
- Oral presentation: Defense of a scientific article published in an international scientific journal related to the module.
Condition of "No Avaluable" (Non-Assessable): The student will receive the grade of "No Avaluable" if they exceed 20% of absence from classes, or in the event that they do not defend the scientific article paper.
This module DOES NOT provide for the single assessment system.
ATTENDANCE POLICY AND EXCUSED ABSENCES DUE TO FORCE MAJEURE
In accordance with the general framework established by the Academic Regulations of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), attendance and active participation in all scheduled in-person sessions (lectures, seminars, lab practicals, and assessment sessions) are mandatory and constitute a fundamental component of continuous assessment. Absences will only be permitted under unforeseen circumstances of force majeure, which must be duly supported by an official document or certificate issued by the relevant authority.
1. Definition of "Accepted Force Majeure Circumstances"
Strictly interpreted and in line with the UAB’s criteria for rescheduling and exceptional circumstances, only the following situations will be considered valid force majeure events:
- Medical Emergencies and Serious Health Issues: Acute, incapacitating illness, emergency surgical interventions, accidents, or hospital admission of the student that coincides with scheduled class hours. Routine medical appointments or check-ups that can be scheduled outside of class hours will not be considered force majeure events. The documentation must include:
1-The physician’s signature and stamp (or a digital verification code).
2-An explicit mention of incapacitation: The medical text must clearly reflect that the patient required emergency care, that "requires rest" or "is unfit to attend their regular activities".
3-The patient's details: Documentation issued in the name of a third party will not be accepted, unless it is for the urgent care of a minor child or a dependent.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Attendance at a medical emergency room will only be considered a valid force majeure circumstance if it coincides with scheduled class hours and is supported by an official emergency medical note. This note must be signed and stamped by the attending physician and explicitly state either the specific time window of medical care or a medical recommendation for rest.
- Serious and Unforeseen Family Circumstances: The death, accident, or serious illness of an immediate family member (up to the second degree of consanguinity or affinity), as well as unexpected emergencies involving the care of dependents.
- Compulsory Civic Duties: Mandatory court summons, official citations from public bodies, or sitting for external state or international official examinations whose dates are completely outside the student's control.
- Extraordinary Work-Related Incidents: Forced shift changes or extraordinary, unpostponable demands by the employer. (Note: For stable employment situations or permanent scheduling conflicts, students must formally apply for the Single Assessment ("Avaluació Única") framework within the deadlines established by the UAB).
- Severe Unforeseen Events: Climate emergencies or general transit strikes that physically prevent safe access to the UAB campus.
Explicit examples of situations that DO NOT qualify as Force Majeure include:
- Pre-scheduled medical appointments: Dental visits, routine checkups, or standard laboratory/blood tests.
- Accompanying independent adult family members to their medical consultations.
- Reception desk receipts or check-in slips that merely prove attendance at a medical center (including emergency rooms) but do not include a prescribed period of medical rest.
- Driving tests (either theory or practical exams) or examinations at private academies.
- Standard work schedules or shifts that the student voluntarily accepted despite prior knowledge of the course timetable.
- Traffic delays, private vehicle breakdowns, or routine commuting issues: Difficulties with private transport are considered the student's personal responsibility. Force majeure will only be recognized in the event of a general public transit strike (e.g., Renfe, FGC), a total road closure ordered by law enforcement due to a severe accident, or an official weather alert from Civil Protection explicitly advising against travel.
2. Procedure and Documentation Requirements
To ensure an absence is excused and does not impact continuous assessment (or to qualify for a rescheduled activity under Article 115 of the Academic Regulations), the following criteria must be fulfilled:
- Format and content: Students must present an official certificate that strictly includes the student’s personal details, the date and time of the occurrence, and a signature, official stamp, or digital verification code from the issuing body (e.g., an emergency room discharge slip from a primary care center (CAP) or hospital). For medical reasons, the document must explicitly state a recommendation for rest or the student's inability to participate in regular activities.
- Submission deadline: The supporting documentation must be emailed to the course instructor or submitted via the Virtual Campus within a maximum of 48 to 72 hours following the absence, or immediately upon the student’s return to class.
3. Limits in Continuous Assessment
While having an absence marked as "excused" waives the attendance penalty, it does not exempt the student from mastering the course content or learning outcomes missed during that period.
If absences—even when fully excused—exceed 20% of the total mandatory or practical sessions of the course, the teaching staff reserves the right to determine that the minimum requirements for continuous assessment have not been met. Consequently, the student's grade may be recorded as "Not Assessable," or the student may be referred to the final reassessment mechanisms established by the Faculty.
4. Continuous Assessment Disruption Clause
If excused absences exceed 20% of the cumulative sessions, the continuous assessment process will be deemed disrupted. Because the instructors will lack sufficient evidence to evaluate the progressive acquisition of competencies, the student's final grade for that assessment period will be "Not Assessable." In such cases, and provided that the student meets the Faculty's eligibility criteria and deadlines, they must resort to the established final reassessment mechanisms.
REASSESSMENT PROCESS
To be eligible for reassessment, the student must have been evaluated in a set of activities equivalent to at least two-thirds (67%) of the final grade for the course or module. Consequently, a student will receive a grade of "Not Assessable" if the combined weight of all completed assessment activities is less than 67% of the final score.
USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)
- Permitted Use (Support): The use of AI is permitted exclusively as a supporting tool (e.g., for literature searches, text editing, or translation). Students must clearly specify which parts of their work were assisted by this technology, identify the specific tools employed, and include a critical reflection on how these tools influenced both the process and the final outcome of the activity.
- Prohibited Use (Generation): The use of AI as a content generation tool is NOT authorized. Concealing its use will be classified as a serious offense and will result in penalties on the final grade.
REGULATION OF ASSESSMENT IRREGULARITIES
Committing any irregularity during an assessment activity (such as academic fraud, plagiarism, or the unauthorized use of artificial intelligence) that could compromise its grading will result in a score of 0 for the affected task. Furthermore, the final grade for the module will automatically be 0 in the following cases:
- If the affected activity is an essential requirement to pass the module (as specified in the course syllabus).
- If multiple irregularities are committed across different assessment activities within the same module.
Regardless of these academic penalties, the institution may initiate disciplinary proceedings against the student involved.
