Objectives

The general aim of this course is to introduce students to the study of logic as a fundamental tool for the analysis of reasoning and argumentation. On the one hand, the course aims to familiarize students with basic notions that make it possible to assess the correctness of deductive arguments; on the other, it seeks to provide them with techniques for identifying their structure, distinguishing between valid and invalid inferences, and expressing more precisely the relations between premises and conclusions. The course pays special attention to philosophical reasoning, but the competences developed in it —conceptual clarity, argumentative rigour, and critical analysis— are equally relevant for students from other fields.

1. Introduction to the course: Why logic? Psychology of deductive reasoning. Logic and artificial intelligence.

2. Introduction to propositional logic.

  • First steps towards symbolization. Connectives. Statements.
  • Semantics of propositional logic. Truth-value assignments. Truth tables. Tautologies, contradictions, and contingent formulas.
  • Satisfiability and logical consequence. Logical equivalence.
  • Natural deduction for propositional logic.

3. Categorical reasoning.

4. Syntax and semantics of first-order logic.

The course will combine theoretical and practical sessions. In the theoretical sessions, the teaching staff will introduce the fundamental concepts, tools, and procedures of each thematic block while encouraging student participation through questions, the discussion of examples, and the analysis of cases of reasoning. These sessions aim to provide the conceptual framework needed to understand basic logical notions and their application to the analysis of arguments.

The practical sessions will focus on solving exercises, problems, and applied activities. Work will be carried out both individually and in groups, with the aim of progressively consolidating students’ skills in analyzing, formalizing, and evaluating reasoning. These sessions will promote active learning through cooperative work strategies, shared correction of exercises, and reasoned discussion of the different possible solutions.

Likewise, at certain points in the syllabus, game-based learning dynamics will be incorporated in order to strengthen motivation, facilitate repeated practice of logical procedures, and encourage more active student participation. These methodologies will be understood as a complement to the formal work proper to the course and will be aimed at improving understanding, autonomy, and the ability to apply logical tools in diverse contexts.

The gender perspective will be incorporated transversally into the course by paying attention to the biases that may intervene in reasoning, in the formulation of examples, and in the evaluation of arguments. Although formal logic studies structures of inference independently of the specific content of statements, the course will pay attention to the fact that arguments appearing in real contexts may contain problematic assumptions, stereotypes, or generalisations.

Annotation: within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

This course does not provide for the single-assessment system.

In order to be assessed for the practical sessions, students must have attended at least 80% of them. If this percentage is not reached, the student will receive 0 points for this part. The practical sessions are not recoverable.

In order to be assessed, students must take both synthesis tests for the course. Failure to take one of the two tests will result in a grade of “Not assessable”.

Participation will be assessed on the basis of the timely submission of exercises, metacognitive reflections, and self-assessments in the theoretical lectures.

The course retake will consist of an exam, and only students who have obtained an average mark of at least 3.5 across the tests, practical sessions, and participation will be eligible to take it. In situations where, in accordance with Article 264 of the Academic Regulations and with the corresponding supporting documentation, assessment activities scheduled for the first assessment period must be rescheduled, these will take place on the same day as the assessment activity of the second assessment period of the course or, where appropriate, during the resit period. If the incident affects an assessment activity in the second assessment period, it will be rescheduled for the day set for the resit, without affecting the established process. In any case, taking into account the circumstances involved, the Degree Coordination, in agreement with the Course Coordination, may determine an alternative date if deemed appropriate.

The teaching staff will inform students of the assessment activities, as well as of the procedure and date for reviewing grades, through the Virtual Campus.

If a student commits any irregularity that may lead to a significant variation in the grade of an assessment activity, that activity will be graded 0, regardless of any disciplinary proceedings that may be initiated. If several irregularities occur in the assessment activities of the same course, the final grade will be 0.

Erasmus students who request to take an exam earlier than scheduled must provide the teaching staff with a written document from their home university justifying the request.

Use of AI

In this course, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies is permitted exclusively for support tasks, such as bibliographic or information searches, text correction, or translation, where appropriate. If such tools are used, the student must clearly identify which parts have been generated with this technology, specify the tools used, and include a critical reflection on how they have influenced the process and the final outcome of a specific activity. Lack of transparency in the use of AI will be considered a breach of academic honesty and may result in a partial or total penalty in the final grade, or more serious sanctions in particularly severe cases. The use of AI is not permitted in practical classes unless explicitly indicated by the teacher.
