Contents
This subject is part of the sequence of methodological subjects of the Degree in Anthropology and, therefore, is based on the previous results and prepares students for Field Practices II and TFG. This continuity allows students to enrich their perspective of the selected subject of study and learn to design and carry out, with the appropriate support, an initial anthropological research.
It is structured following the logic of the research projects and the contents are introduced and discussed in the development of thecourse: knowledge related to the different research techniques (instruments, practices and procedures) and belonging to each design, avoiding the detachment of the theoretical and methodological orientations that affect the selection.
The different types of research, designs and strategies are discussed first. Then the operationalization of concepts (this is a central point) and the sampling strategies are developed. From here, and considering field work as a complex articulated of techniques, we introduce the different techniques and procedures for collecting, systematising, analysing the information and, finally, presenting results.

| Reading specific bibliography for each design (PETNO) | 40 | 1.6 | CM15, CM17 |
| Theoretical classes | 45 | 1.8 | CM15, SM25 |
The didactic methodology used will depend on the type of activity carried out. In this course we distinguish between theoretical classes, classroom practices (PAUL) and follow-up tutorials (SEM).
Theoretical classes (TE) will have an introduction by the teacher, with examples and discussions with the participants. In these classes readings will be recommended based on the interests of the participants. The content of these sessions is essential for the development of the PAUL learning consolidation exercises.
Classroom practice (PAUL). The classroom will be used to carry out the practical work scheduled in the course, which will enable the progress of the research project (final project) to be monitored. These practical sessions will involve specific exercises to consolidate what has been learned in the theory classes. They will be carried out in the classroom in pairs or groups of students. Students must attend at least 80% of the sessions in order to be eligible for assessment of the course.
Individual tutorials (PETNO). In individual tutorials, whenever possible (they can be in pairs or small groups), the development of the research plan will be periodically reviewed. This document will be delivered and reviewed until it is completed and submitted for final evaluation. Not reassessable
15 minutes of a class will be reserved, within the calendar established by the center / degree, for the completion by the students of the surveys of evaluation of the performance of the teaching staff and of evaluation of the subject.
Assessment
Continuous assessment activities
| Title | Weight | Hours | ECTS | Learning outcomes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Written test | 15% | 5 | 0.2 | KM19, SM25 |
| Assessment of individual tutorials (PETNO) (not reassessable) | 20 % | 5 | 0.2 | CM15, CM17, KM19 |
| Classroom practices (PAUL): written practical exercises to be done individually, in pairs and in groups | 20 % | 10 | 0.4 | CM15, CM17, KM19 |
| Partial and final work of individual work | 45 % | 35 | 1.4 | SM22, SM25 |
The assessment is divided into the following modules, as detailed below:
Individual final assignment: 45% (divided into two submissions during the course)
- First Submission (25%). Submission is compulsory. If it is not submitted by the set deadline, you will forfeit the right to submit 2 and will not be able to pass this module.
- Second Submission (20%). This corresponds to the final assignment and includes the marking of the first submission.
Classroom practicals (PAUL) (20%): Written practical exercises carried out individually, in pairs and in groups during class. A minimum of 5 classroom exercises must be completed and submitted for this module to be assessed. Group PAULs cannot be re-assessed due to the impossibility of replicating the conditions under which they were carried out and the pedagogical objectives established for their completion. The rest is recoverable during the revaluation period set out in the Dean’s Office calendar.
Written test (15%):Exam covering the theoretical content of the lectures and recommended reading. It is an essential requirement to obtain a mark of 5.0 out of 10 or higher in this test in order for it to be included in the weighted average with the rest of the course marks.
Continuous assessment of individual tutorials (PETNO) (20%) (non-resitable activity). This is an individual support activity linked to in-person attendance on the date and at the time agreed at the start of the academic year and communicated via the virtual campus. To be eligible to pass this module and the course, it is essential to have participated in at least four (4) of the six (6) sessions scheduled throughout the academic year. It is very important to adhere to the date and time agreed with each student.
At the time each assessment activity is carried out, the teaching staff will inform students, via the Virtual Campus, of the procedure and the date for reviewing the grades.
CONDITIONS FOR THE "NON-ASSESSABLE" GRADE:
A student will receive a ‘Not assessed’ grade if they have not submitted the first part of the assignment or have not sat the written test on theoretical content. Unexcused absence or late submission of continuous assessment activities without a duly justified and substantiated reason means that the activity will not be assessed.
Individual final work guide:
1. Presentation and description of the topic / subject of study and its context (PC I).
2. Theoretical framework - state of affairs. Articulation and coherent development of the topic / object of study or of its own
2. Theoretical framework - state of affairs. Coordination of the topic / object of study or its context, articulated and coherent, based on the read and systematized theoretical bibliography.
3. Questions and tentative research objectives (from points 2 and 3, and in connection with 4)
4. Statement of the main hypothesis
5. Universe and units.
6. Dependent and independent variables.
7. Operationalization of the hypothesis
8. Data necessary to contrast the main hypothesis. Syndicated hierarchical and organized key data forthetest (paragraphs 6 to 9).
9. Relevant techniques.
9.1 Specification of the relevance of the techniques for testing the main hypothesis, auxiliary and the contrasting implications. Specification, also, of the already operationalized concepts (definitions and indicators), in sections 6 to 9 and 10, that can be obtained with each technique.
9.2 Specification of bias, limitations, complementarity and articulation of the different proposed techniques.
9.3 Basis of the non-belonging of the techniques not considered.
9.4 Specification of the selection criteria of the subjects (or sources), sampling strategy and sample characteristics for each of the chosen techniques (theoretical proposal beyond Field II Practices).
10. Final comment: general considerations about the work done.
11. Quoted bibliography.
PLAGIARISM
Should a student commit any form of misconduct (plagiarism, copying, impersonation) that leads to a significant variation in the mark for a particular assessment, they will be awarded a mark of 0, regardless of any disciplinary proceedings that may result. Should several irregularities be verified in the assessment tasks for the same module, the final mark for that module will be 0.
USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)
The student must clearly (i) identify which parts have been generated using AI technology; (ii) specify the tools used; and (iii) included critical reflection on how these have influenced the process and final outcome of the activity. Lack of transparency regarding the use of AI in the assessed activity will be considered academic dishonesty; the corresponding grade may be lowered, or the work may even be awarded a zero. Incases of greater infringement, more serious action may be taken
ASSESSMENT DATES AND SINGLE-SESSION ASSESSMENT
-When each assessment activity takes place, the lecturer will inform students (via Moodle) of the procedure and date for reviewing marks.
-This module does not use a single-session assessment system. This module cannot be resat as it involves continuous, individually tutored assessment throughout the entire semester.
