The subject of Modern Language I (Portuguese) is instrumental and essentially practical. The emphasis in the formative activities will be put in the active participation of the students to be able to reach the competences anticipated in this educational guide.

In general terms, the learning will be directed through the following set of techniques and actions:

- Master class with ICT support and collective discussion.

- The practice of written and oral expression in Portuguese language.

- Complete individual and group exercises, both written and oral.

- Carry out autonomous activities: notebook exercises, preparation of tests, readings, essays, searching for information on the Internet.

- Classroom exchanges (teacher-student, student-student).

- Grammar, written / oral, and written / oral tests.

Annotation: within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

Students have to perform 5 assessment activities in class:

1. Two in-person written expression tests: 28% of the final mark.
2. One in-person language proficiency test (grammar and vocabulary): 25% of the final mark.
3. One oral expression test: 25% of the final mark.
4. Two in-person tests on listening and reading comprehension: 20% of the final mark.
5. Various assignments: attendance at seminars, conferences, workshops, etc.; completion of supplementary tasks: 2% of the final mark.

The subject's final mark will be the sum of the five partial percentages (28% + 25% + 25% + 20% + 2% = 100%).

Students must attend assessment activities (on the date and at the time established) and under no circumstances will it be accepted to take them on remote or in a later date or time. The lecturer must be notified of any absences from assessment activities due to health reasons or unforeseen circumstances in advance, via email; in this case, any absence from assessment activities must be justified by means of official documents within a maximum of 15 days of the assessment activity date. In the case of an absence from assessment activities due to work reasons, the lecture must be notified at least 15 days in advance; in this case, any absence from assessment activities must be justified by means of official documents issued by the company itself. In the case of an absence from assessment activities due any other reason not been unforeseen, the lecture must be notified at least 15 days in advance; in this case, any absence from assessment activities must be justified by means of official documents within a maximum of 15 days of the assessment activity date. Students will lose the right to take the assessment activity if they arrive 30 minutes or more late.

It is forbidden the use of any automatic translation tool, or text creation tool or text rewriting tool in the assessment activities, including the oral presentation. Any misconduct or infringement that includes the use of any of these tools, or plagiarism or copying or impersonation, etc., detected by the lecture, will be given a mark of zero for the entire assessment activity and for all students involved.

The use of cell phones in class is prohibited, except when requested or authorized by the lecture for activities requiring them. The use of chat rooms, social media, or instant messaging during class is also prohibited.

The subject's lecture will evaluate any exceptional cases or circumstances personally.

Following the subject and contacting its lecture are solely the responsibility of each student. Any communication regarding this subject must be sent to the lecture.

The subject's schedule may vary depending on the group's pace of work and needs. The lecture reserves the right to make any modifications they consider appropriate.

Continuous assessment

Assessment

Assessment is continuous. Students must provide evidence of their progress by completing various tasks and tests. Tasks and tests deadlines will be indicated in the course schedule on the first day of class. The information on assessment activities and their weighting is a guide. The subject's lecturer will provide full information when teaching begins.

Review

When publishing final marks prior to recording them on students' transcripts, the lecturer will provide written notification of a date and time for reviewing assessment activities. Students must arrange reviews in agreement with the lecturer.

Missed/failed assessment activities

Students may retake assessment activities they have failed or compensate for any they have missed, provided that those they have actually performed account for a minimum of 66.6% (two thirds) of the subject's final mark and that they have a weighted average mark of at least 3.5.

The lecturer will inform students of the procedure involved, in writing, when publishing final marks prior to recording them on transcripts. The lecturer may set one assignment per failed or missed assessment activity or a single assignment to cover a number of such activities. Under no circumstances may an assessment activity worth 100% of the final mark be retaken or compensated for. In case of retaking, maximum grade will be 5 (Pass).

Classification as "not assessable"

In the event of the assessment activities a student has performed accounting for just 25% or less of the subject's final mark, their work will be classified as "not assessable" on their transcript.

Misconduct in assessment activities

Any irregularity committed during an assessment (academic fraud, plagiarism, or misuse of AI, unless expressly authorized in the course syllabus) that could lead to a significant change in the grade will result in a grade of 0 for that assessment. If multiple irregularities occur during assessments for the same course, the final grade for that course will be 0. Furthermore, disciplinary proceedings may be initiated against any individual who commits any of these irregularities.

Use of AI

In this course, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies is not permitted at any stage of the assessment activities. Any work that includes AI-generated content will be considered a breach of academic integrity and will be graded a 0, regardless of any disciplinary proceedings that may be initiated.

Single Assessment

This subject does not provide for a single assessment system.
