Objectives

To provide tools for reflection and analysis based on feminist critique of science and the history and philosophy of science, technology and education with a gender perspective, so that students can take an active part in the various debates and current events, as well as prepare programs and policies to respond to future challenges in the scientific-technological fields with an intersectional gender perspective.

Learning outcomes

  1. Assess the reliability of sources, select important data and cross-check information.
  2. Construct discourse tailored to the different formats for debating science in the public sphere.
  3. Develop a critical awareness of how scientific knowledge circulates and of its dynamic status between experts and non-experts.
  4. Formulate scientific museography projects.
  5. Identify the various models for representing science and knowledge in the public sphere and suggest improvements to these.
  6. Interpret and interrelate the conceptual bases of feminist theories, and the application of feminist epistemologies for generating knowledge.
  7. Promote team spirit and the integration of others' points of view.

  1. Introduction to the course. The exclusion of women and others: Modernity, coloniality and science.
  2. The androcentric gaze in the construction of science.
  3. The emergence of Feminist Studies of Science.
  4. The sexual regime: the imperative of coherence between sex and gender.
  5. Gender research and feminist epistemologies.
  6. Feminist contributions to science, medicine and technology.

The sessions are organized around an introduction to each topic by the lecturer. The students commit to reading, taking notes and asking questions about the proposed texts, which are essential reading material for each session. Each student will develop two or three oral presentations throughout the course, based on the core bibliography and other readings and materials proposed by the participants. Various debates and argumentation formats will be used with the aim of integrating the new content, ideas and concepts learned during each class.

 

Annotation: within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

Continuous evaluation: The assessment of competencies acquired in this course is continuous and based on the active participation of students in the various in-class activities.

The final grade will be the sum of the points obtained in each of the four assessment activities. These will consist of participation in classroom discussions and other reflective exercises (30%), two short oral presentations (the first 20% and the second 25%), and a written exam on the course content (25%).

Evaluation checking: After each evaluable activity, the professor will inform students of the revision procedure and date.

Resit: Students who have not passed the continuous evaluation have the right to resits as long as they have accomplished the mandatory requirements (see Faculty's regulations)

“Non-evaluable”: Students will obtain a not assessed/not submitted mark if they have submitted less than 30% of the evaluation items.

Single evaluation: Students who opts for the single evaluation will have to submit all assignments and evaluation activities scheduled in continuous evaluation..

Plagiarism: If a student commits any irregularity that could be significant in the evaluation, the evaluation of this activity will be marked as 0. If some irregularities occur, the final mark for that course will be 0.

This subject allows the use of AI technologies exclusively for support tasks such as [***bibliographic or content-based searches, text correction or translations, where applicable]. In the case of subjects in a Modern Languages degree, use of translation must be specifically authorised by the teacher. Other specific situations may be contemplated, as deemed appropriate by the teacher. The student must clearly (i) identify which parts have been generated using AI technology; (ii) specify the tools used; and (iii) include a critical reflection on how these have influenced the process and final outcome of the activity. Lack of transparency regarding the use of AI in the assessed activity will be considered academic dishonesty; the corresponding grade may be lowered, or the work may even be awarded a zero. In cases of greater infringement, more serious action may be taken.
