Prerequisites
To take this course requires a basic ability to understand concepts of physics and reading comprehension of English.
Objectives
This course is part of the subject "Communication", which also includes the subjects of History of Communication, Written and Audiovisual Communication Languages, Structure of Communication and Communication Theories.
Therefore, the subject fits into the group of basic subjects related to communication, all of them with 6 credits.
The aim of this subject is to provide the basic keys to interpreting technologies and their role in society. It is an in-depth and at the same time theoretical introduction, to give the basis for reflection on technology, once the more practical subject of Technologies in Audiovisual Communication has been taught in the first year, first semester. The subject of Information and Communication Technologies is the natural continuation.
The objective of this course, as defined in the curricula, is the study of the technologies associated with the development of the information and knowledge society, considering especially their impact on innovation and on the creation of socio-cultural environments. The aim is to reflect on the role of technologies in society, citizens and the audiovisual industry.
Specifically, the objectives of the course are:
- To know and identify the main theoretical discourses on technology.
- To know the main concepts related to audiovisual technology.
- To know, identify and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of each technology related to the audiovisual transmission and reception.
- To reflect critically on the technological discourse and the application of the information and audiovisual communication technologies.

The acquisition of knowledge and skills by the students will be carried out through various methodological procedures that include theory classes, readings, seminars and tutorials, in addition to the textual and audiovisual support materials available through the Virtual Campus.
Subject content will be taught in the theory classes. Support material such as readings and audiovisual content will be used, and participation and debate with and among students will be encouraged
Small groups seminars will be held, focusing on specific topics based on previous readings and case analysis.
A group work will be carried out, relating theory with specific cases of the technological reality of the media. The work will be tutored.
A detailed schedule outlining the content of each session will be presented on the first day of the course and will be available on the course’s Virtual Campus, where students will find the various teaching materials deemed appropriate by the instructors and necessary information for effective course monitoring. Should the teaching modality change for reasons of force majeure according to the competent authorities, the teaching staff will inform students of any modifications to the course schedule and teaching methodologies.
Note: The course content will be sensitive to issues related to gender perspective and the use of inclusive language.

The course includes the following assessment activities:
- Exam: 40% of the final grade.
- Seminars: 20% of the final grade.
- Group project: 40% of the final grade.
In order to pass the course, students must obtain a minimum grade of 5 out of 10 in the exam.
Single assessment:
The single assessment consists of three separate components, each of which must be passed with a minimum grade of 5 in order to pass the course:
- Individual project (30%).
- Theoretical exam (40%).
- Reading-based synthesis exercise (30%).
The project is an individual assignment. Students will be expected to demonstrate their ability to critically analyse contemporary technological discourse by relating the course theory to specific cases. At the beginning of the semester, a detailed protocol explaining the requirements and procedures will be made available.
The theoretical exam will cover the contents addressed in lectures, seminars and the compulsory readings assigned throughout the course.
The reading-based synthesis exercise is an on-site assessment in which students will be required to establish connections between the compulsory seminar readings and the theoretical concepts covered in class. Students opting for the single assessment system may attend seminars as auditors if they wish.
Not assessed:
Students will receive a grade of "Not Assessed" if they have neither participated in the seminars nor sat the theoretical exam.
Resit conditions:
Students will be entitled to resit the course provided that they have been assessed on activities accounting for at least two-thirds of the total course grade.
To be eligible for the resit assessment, students must have obtained a minimum overall average grade of 3.5 in the course.
The activities excluded from the resit process are the seminars and the group project, as well as the individual project in the case of the single assessment pathway.
Use of AI and plagiarism:
In this course, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies is permitted as an integral part of coursework development, provided that the final result reflects a significant contribution by the student in terms of analysis and personal reflection. Students must clearly identify which parts have been generated using this technology, specify the tools used, and include a critical reflection on how these tools have influenced both the process and the final outcome of the activity. Failure to disclose the use of AI transparently will be considered a breach of academic integrity and may result in a penalty in the activity grade or more serious sanctions in severe cases.
Any irregularity committed in an assessment activity (academic fraud, plagiarism, or improper use of AI, unless such use is expressly authorised in the course guide) that may lead to a significant alteration of the assessment result will result in that activity being graded with a 0. If the course guide establishes obtaining a minimum mark in that assessment activity as an essential requirement for passing the course, or if several irregularities occur in the assessment activities of the same course, the final grade for the course will be 0. In addition, disciplinary proceedings may be initiated against any student involved in such irregularities.
Any student suspected of submitting work generated by AI, produced by other individuals, or copied from other sources; including AI-generated content without proper acknowledgement; or falling outside the permitted uses, may be required to provide draft versions or other materials demonstrating that the work is original and the result of their own authorship. Students may also be asked to explain or justify their work separately. Teaching staff may use AI-detection systems or carry out any verification procedures they consider appropriate. If irregularities are detected after review, the work may be graded with a zero and the student may be subject to additional disciplinary measures.
