Prerequisites

It is recommended to have taken the Sociology of Education course.

Objectives

To analize the educational reality of a territory using the knowledge and tools of the sociology of education, as well the intervention in social policies at the local level. In this way, an applied approximation of the theoretical and conceptual frameworks to the socio-political reality of education is sought, both in the formal and non-formal dimension.

The specific objectives are as follows:

  • To know how to apply the theoretical foundations of the sociology of education and of education policy to the socio-educational diagnosis of a particular territory.
  • To recognize, at local level, the main educational issues as a synthesis of the socio-political viewpoint.
  • To develop critical thinking in analysing the current educational challenges.
  • To understand the origin, the consequences and the social, legislative and political constraints that frame the socio-educational intervention at the local level.
  • To identify the socio-educational programmes, resources and services deployed in the territory as a political response to the main educational problems.

Learning outcomes

  1. Students must be capable of managing their own time, planning their own study, managing the relationship with their tutor or adviser, as well as setting and meeting deadlines for a work project.
  2. Searching for documentary sources starting from concepts.
  3. Developing self-learning strategies.
  4. Respecting the diversity and plurality of ideas, people and situations.
  5. Defining the appropriate sociological concepts in order to interpret the educational and school phenomena.
  6. Comparing the different theoretical approaches about education.
  7. Distinguishing the social interpretations of education according to these approaches.
  8. Expressing the debates regarding these approaches, that refer to education.
  9. Distinguishing the underlying social phenomena of educational policies and conflicts.
  10. Comparing the reading of educational phenomena from several ideologies of the social reality of Spain and Catalonia.
  11. Distinguishing sociological concepts, as well as the methods and techniques of social investigation commonly used to analyse education.
  12. Distinguishing sociological concepts concerning education adopted by the actors involved in the educational system.
  13. Relating the explanations of educational inequalities with general theoretical and methodological debates.

Classes are structured into three types of activities:

1. Presentations, by the teachers, of the contents and basic questions of the syllabus. It is carried out with the whole class group and allows the identification of the main problems and the exposition of the main contents through an open and active participation of the students.
2. Working seminars in the classroom.
3. Presentations of assingment by students.

Beyond the face-to-face sessions, autonomous work will be requested for the elaboration of the course work and the preparation of seminars and presentations.

 

Annotation: within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

The evaluation will be continuous and will be based on the following evidence:

- Preparation and submission of a ‘portfolio’ (reflective synthesis) of the learning achieved (20%). It is recommended to make a daily learning record that can be handed in as an appendix. The maximum length of the synthesis will be 5 pages.

- The completion of a course work on a territory, which will have a part of group work (25%) and a part of individual work on two socio-educational devices or programmes of the chosen territory (25%).

- Oral presentations: Two individual presentations (15%) and a collective presentation of the work (15%).

The territory of analysis will be agreed with the students. It will preferably be located in a large municipality or in a district of a large city.

In order to be able to make an average with the evaluation activities it is necessary to obtain, at least, a 5 in each one of the empirical evidences that integrate the evaluation system.

Class attendance is compulsory: the student must attend a minimum of 80% of classes in order to benefit from the continuous evaluation modality. It is considered NOT EVALUABLE (NA) when the student does not present any of the required evaluative evidences or in the case of a number of absences exceeding the established number.

The result of the evaluation activities will be available within twenty working days after their presentation.

To participate in the recovery of the student must have been previously evaluated in a set of activities the weight of those equivalent to a minimum of two thirds of the total avaluation activities.

Copying or plagiarism constitutes a crime that may represent suspending the subject. A work, activity is considered to be \"copied\" when it reproduces all or part of the work from one / to another /to a colleague / to or make use of artificial intelligence for their realisation.

A piece of work or activity will be considered “plagiarised” when it presents as original a part of a text written by another author without citing the sources, regardless of whether the original sources are in print or digital format.

The performance of any irregularity in an assessment activity (academic fraud, plagiarism, or misuse of AI) that may lead to a significant change in the grade will result in that activity being graded with a 0. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies is allowed for support tasks, such as bibliographic or information searches. The student must clearly identify which parts have been generated using this technology and specify the tools used.


Single assessment

The course includes the option of single assessment.

In the case of a single assessment, a reasoned application must be made to the faculty in accordance with the terms established by the latter, as well as informing the teaching staff of the subject.

The single assessment of this subject will consist of two evaluation evidences: an individual work and an exam. Each of these parts will count for 50% of the final mark. The exam will take place on the date stipulated in the faculty's calendar, on which date the paper will also be handed in. This work will be individual and will have the same characteristics as the coursework proposed for the whole student body.

In case the student who participates in the single assessment does not pass the exam/work, he/she has the right to retake the exam/work on the date stipulated by the faculty.

The revision of the final qualification follows the same criteria as for the continuous assessment, 20 working days.

5-10 minutes of a lesson will be set aside for students to respond to the teacher performance evaluation and subject evaluation surveys.

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies is permitted for support tasks, such as bibliographic or information searches. The student must clearly identify which parts have been generated using this technology and specify the tools used.
