Prerequisites

The prerequisites depend on the specific TFM, and are set by the corresponding supervisor. It is warmly recommended to decide on a project during the first semester, before the Christmas break, while following the courses.

Contents




The master thesis will consist in a research work, preferably original, in the fields of Particle Physics, Astrophysics or Cosmology, developed in a pre-existing research group, preferably, at UAB, IFAE or ICE-CSIC.





The research work must be done individually.





The student and the supervisor will agree on the research project.





If the supervisor is not UAB personnel belonging to the Physics Department, the student will find a tutor from the Physics Departament (the coordinator of the TFMs can serve as tutor).

After having worked on a research project, whose methodology and timeline is set by the specific supervisor, the student has to present their work in a written document, in the standard format of a thesis report of maximum 50 pages in total, excluding the bibliography. The document should be written in English, and should contain: a cover page with the title and the names of the student and supervisor, abstract, introduction, methodology, results, conclusions, and bibliography. The document should include an electronically signed statement of authorship, placed at the beginning of the thesis, after the cover page. The work should be presented in a way that it is accessible to non-experts, in particular in the abstract, introduction (no undefined acronyms) and conclusions. Any content that is not authored by the student should be appropriately referenced.


Under exceptional circumstances, and only after having obtained the approvals of the coordinator (Fabrizio Rompineve for IFAE TFMs, Alvaro Sanchez-Monge for ICE TFMs) and of the supervisor, the student may present their work in the format of an article, in 2-column 15 pages maximum length document, excluding appendices.


The student then defends their work in person, in front of an evaluation committee, via an oral examination, consisting of: an oral presentation of minimum 20 minutes and maximum 30 minutes, followed by questions from the committee. The oral presentation should be in English.


Annotation: within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

The written thesis and the oral examination are evaluated by a committee of 2-3 members. The supervisor(s) will previously submit their own evaluation report to the coordinators, who will make them available to the committee members. The student can choose to defend before the closing of either the first or second exam window (typically the first week of July and the first week of September respectively).

Students who do not defend in the first window are nonetheless warmly recommended to defend before the end of July, since defenses in August are not possible, and need to obtain the approval of the corresponding coordinators to defend in the first days of September.


The thesis should be handed in electronic form preferably two weeks before the defense, and no later than one week before the defense. The date of the defense is decided by the coordinators. The use of AI tools in the preparation of the document and the presentation should be explicitly stated in the document and during the presentation when presenting the corresponding content.


Bibliography

The student receives guidelines on the bibliography from the supervisor(s), and additionally performs their own bibliographic research.
