Prerequisites
The prerequisites are those established in the academic progression regulations, specifically within the enrollment progression section. In particular, students must have passed all first-year courses and completed a minimum of 120 ECTS credits from the first three years of the degree programme.
However, since the main objective of external internships is to enable students to apply the knowledge acquired throughout their studies, it is recommended that they undertake the internship during the final stage of their degree, that is, after completing the first three years of the programme. Students should also ensure that they have sufficient time available to carry out the internship successfully.
Objectives
The educational objectives of external academic internships are:
- To enable students to apply and complement the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills acquired throughout their academic studies.
- To foster the development of technical, methodological, and professional competencies that prepare students for professional practice, particularly within the aeronautical sector.
- To provide students with an understanding of professional working methodologies and environments, promoting the integration and application of the knowledge gained during their studies.
- To strengthen the development of transferable and personal skills, including teamwork, initiative and entrepreneurship, problem-solving in new environments, creativity, and communication skills.
- To provide practical experience that facilitates entry into the labour market and enhances students’ future employability.

Contents
External academic internships may be carried out in different departments of airlines, airports, and engineering companies related to the aeronautical sector with which the corresponding cooperation agreements have been established. Likewise, activities carried out in companies or departments related to logistics and supply chain management may also be recognized.
The nature of the activities to be undertaken will depend on the functions and responsibilities of the host organization. Prior to the start of the internship, a training plan must be defined as an annex to the specific educational cooperation agreement, agreed upon by the student, the host organization, and the university. This document must describe the planned tasks, training content, and educational objectives of the placement.
The training plan must be approved by the academic supervisor.
For each student, an individualized training plan will be formalized, including at least the following aspects:
- General information about the placement (start and end dates, location, schedule, expected workload, and, where applicable, any financial support for study purposes).
- General objective of the internship.
- Competencies and learning outcomes the student is expected to achieve.
- Detailed description of the tasks and activities to be carried out.
- Monitoring and supervision procedure carried out by the person appointed by the host organization.
These elements will be specified in the activity proposal document available on the School of Engineering website, which will be prepared jointly by the student and the host organization.
Final internship report
At the end of the placement, the student must submit a final report with a recommended length of 8 to 10 pages, following the structure and guidelines established by the Degree coordination.
The report must include at least the following sections:
- Identification details of the student, the host organization, and the academic and external supervisors.
- Description of the organization and the department, area, or service where the internship was carried out.
- Analysis of the tasks performed and their relationship with the knowledge and competencies acquired during the degree studies.
- Assessment of the adequacy of the training received during the degree for carrying out the internship.
- Description of the problems or challenges encountered and the strategies used to solve them.
- Identification of the main learning outcomes achieved during the placement.
- Justification of the level of achievement of the competencies defined in the course syllabus.
- Description of other competencies, skills, or knowledge acquired.
- Personal reflection and self-assessment of the training and professional experience.
- Identification of the most relevant aspects, both positive and those open to improvement, related to the internship.
- Improvement proposals addressed to the student, the host organization, and the internship programme.
- Declaration of responsibility.
Confidentiality
The student must respect the duty of confidentiality and maintain professional secrecy regarding any confidential or restricted information of the host organization accessed during the internship.
Relationship with the Final Degree Project
External internships may provide an appropriate context for identifying, defining, or developing a Final Degree Project (TFG), provided that the topic is suitable and meets the established academic requirements.
Learning activities and methodology
| Title | Hours | ECTS | Learning outcomes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preparation of the final report | 0 | 0 | CM27 |
| Placement in the company or institution | 128 | 5.12 | CM25, CM26, CM27, SM34 |
| Planning and monitoring of the internship in the company | 0 | 0 | CM28 |
There are three mechanisms for undertaking external academic internships:
- Internships proposed by the Degree Coordination in partner companies or institutions. The offers will be published by the School.
- Internships initiated by the student through direct contact with a company. In this case, the internship coordinator must validate the training plan and ensure compliance with the remaining course requirements.
- Internships managed through the employability service, provided that academic recognition has been previously approved by the coordination (a mandatory requirement before the start of the placement).
It is recommended that students register with the employability service from the beginning of the academic year.
In all cases, students must obtain prior approval from the coordination before starting the internship for it to be considered valid.
In all cases, students will be supervised by an academic supervisor and an external supervisor. The external supervisor will be the person appointed by the host company or institution, who will assign tasks in accordance with the training plan, monitor the student’s progress, and issue the relevant evaluation reports. The academic supervisor will be a university lecturer responsible for monitoring the internship, ensuring that the course objectives are met, and awarding the final grade.
The internship placement will have a duration of 128 hours. The schedule and timetable must be compatible with the student’s academic, training, representation, and participation activities at the university, and will be defined individually according to the characteristics of the internship and the availability of the host organization.
Once the internship has been completed, the student must write a final report, which must be submitted according to the established format (available on the School’s website) and within the deadlines set by the internship coordination.
Assessment
Continuous assessment activities
| Title | Weight | Hours | ECTS | Learning outcomes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Work plan report | 10% | 14 | 0.56 | CM28 |
| Report from the external supervisor of the host organization | 50% | 0 | 0 | CM25, CM26, CM27, CM28, SM34 |
| Internship report | 40% | 8 | 0.32 | CM25, CM26, CM27, SM34 |
At the end of the placement, the programme coordination will assess the internship based on the reports issued by the academic supervisor. This assessment will include: the Internship Work Plan Report (10% of the final grade), the internship report submitted by the student (40% of the final grade), and the report issued by the external supervisor from the host organization (50% of the final grade).
The Internship Work Plan Report must be signed by the student and submitted to the Academic Management Office within a maximum period of 15 days from the start of the placement.
The company internship supervisor will evaluate the level of satisfaction with the internship through a document prepared by the Degree coordination and available on the programme website. This report, duly signed and stamped by the company, must be submitted together with the internship report, signed by the student, to the Academic Management Office within a maximum of 15 days after the end of the placement.
Assessment criteria for the final student report
Content (60% of the grade):
- Accuracy in the description of the company and the tasks performed.
- Mastery of specific knowledge.
- Reflection on the work carried out during the internship (content and contributions).
- Critical analysis of the acquisition of skills and competencies.
- Proposals for improvement of the student’s performance, the company, and the internship programme.
Writing and format (40% of the grade):
- Clear and concise language.
- Appropriate use of technical and professional vocabulary.
- Spelling and grammatical accuracy.
- Faithfulness of the content to the required sections.
- Presentation quality.
Failure, without justified cause, to comply with the terms established in the specific agreement signed by the student may lead to termination of the agreement, as well as a failing grade (numerical grade 0) in the subject.
Once the internship has started, the “not assessable” grade cannot be awarded.
In accordance with the Degree coordination and the School of Engineering management, this subject is not eligible for resit due to its highly practical nature.
The award of a “distinction (honours)” grade is decided by the teaching staff responsible for the subject. UAB regulations state that honours may only be awarded to students with a final grade equal to or higher than 9.00. Up to a maximum of 5% of enrolled students may receive this distinction. For this subject, it will only be granted if the final grade of each of the three assessment activities is equal to or higher than 8 points.
Without prejudice to any other disciplinary measures deemed appropriate, any irregularities committed by the student that may affect the grading of an assessment activity will be awarded a zero. Consequently, copying, plagiarism, cheating, allowing others to copy, or any fraudulent behaviour in any assessment activity will result in a failing grade of zero.
