Prerequisites
To enroll in Professional Internships I, students must have successfully completed all first-year courses and a minimum of 120 ECTS credits from the first three years of the degree programme. In addition, the allocation of internship placements may take into account criteria such as the student's academic record, future career interests, and demonstrated knowledge and competencies.
Admission to Professional Internships I is through a pre-registration process, the schedule for which is published annually. The timetable can be consulted at: https://www.uab.cat/web/estudiar/graus/graus/informacio-1345722449027.html. Students who do not complete the pre-registration process will not be eligible to enroll in Professional Internships I. Internship placements will be assigned only to students who have pre-registered within the established deadline. During pre-registration, students may rank up to five preferred internship placements. Placements will be allocated based on the student's grade point average (GPA).
Before starting the internship, students must be enrolled in the course and must have signed either the specific internship agreement (for placements outside the UAB) or the terms and conditions document (for placements within the UAB).
Students will be assigned an academic supervisor from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (the degree programme's internship coordinator) and a supervisor at the host organization, who will have the professional experience, expertise, and availability required to guide the student throughout the internship.
The coordinator of Professional Internships I will be responsible for negotiating, formalizing, and managing the agreements governing external internships with institutions, organizations, public bodies, and companies. The coordinator will also advise students both during the placement allocation process and throughout the internship. The course coordinator will introduce students to their supervisors at the host organization and, once the internship has been completed, will assess the student's performance on the basis of the internship report, the host supervisor's evaluation, the employability training completed, and the follow-up supervision meetings.
Internship schedules must be compatible with the student's academic commitments, training activities, and representative or participatory responsibilities at the University. Working hours will also be determined according to the characteristics of the internship and the availability of the host organization.
For all internships, including those carried out at the UAB, students are required to take out accident and civil liability insurance, as the standard student insurance is not sufficient. Students must pay for the supplementary insurance policy arranged by the UAB (approximately €6).
Students enrolled in Professional Internships I who have demonstrated the acquisition of the basic competencies by successfully completing the credits corresponding to the basic training courses and the compulsory second- and third-year courses are expected to be able to communicate accurately and appropriately both orally and in writing.
Some companies or institutions reserve the right to require students applying for internships to take a Catalan language proficiency test.
Objectives
The external internships are offered in two consecutive semesters, so that the student can take them, if he / she wishes, in the first or in the second, or choose to carry out these practices during an entire course. These are optional subjects of 6 ECTS of the Degree in Catalan Philology: Studies in Literature and Linguistics.
The external internships of the Degree in Catalan Philology: Studies in Literature and Linguistics aim to put the student in contact with the professional world. Given that the professional activities which correspond to the study of Catalan language and literature are many and varied, and have to do with both language and literature, the external internships carried out by students are also diversified and are chosen based on their future interests.
Learning outcomes

- Work self-sufficiently on the synchronic and diachronic study of Catalan language and literature.

- Master oral and written expression in Catalan.

- Appropriately apply the principles governing standard language and present-day high registers, giving attention to their problem areas and conditions of use.

- Apply the literary knowledge acquired to the production needs of publishers and the Media.

- Identify the normative, stylistic or argumentative errors in a text.
Contents
The course Professional Internships I includes a 130-hour internship placement in an organization whose professional activity is directly related to the subjects taught in the Bachelor's Degree in Catalan Philology: Literary and Linguistic Studies.
The main activities include proofreading and editing oral and written texts (in publishing companies and media organizations); language promotion and linguistic consultancy (in software companies, language normalization services, and the language services of companies and institutions); data collection for sociolinguistic research (in language planning centres or private organizations); grammatical and lexicographical work (in publishing houses and terminology centres); teaching Catalan as a foreign or additional language (in language schools); cultural promotion and documentation tasks (in foundations, cultural centres, libraries, and theatres); and research support (within UAB research groups and research centres).
The Degree in Catalan Philology: Literary and Linguistic Studies has established internship agreements with companies, institutions, public services, and research groups. A list of participating organizations is available at: https://filcat.uab.cat/practiques-externes.
The internships are coordinated by a member of the Department of Catalan Philology, who serves as the course coordinator. In accordance with the established schedule, the coordinator assigns the available placements to enrolled students. The coordinator is responsible for negotiating, formalizing, and managing the agreements governing external internships with institutions, organizations, public bodies, and companies. The coordinator also advises students throughout both the placement allocation process and the internship period. The course coordinator introduces students to their supervisors at the host organization. Once the internship has been completed, the coordinator assesses each student's performance based on the internship report submitted by the student, the evaluation provided by the host supervisor, completion of the employability training, and participation in the two mandatory supervision meetings.

The specific training provided depends on the professional activity of the host organization. Likewise, the learning outcomes vary according to the specific skills acquired during the internship.
The supervisor at the host organization will be responsible for guiding and overseeing the activities carried out by the student within the framework of the Professional Internships I course, in accordance with the corresponding training plan.
The student's workload (150 hours, equivalent to 6 ECTS credits) is distributed as follows:
- On-site hours at the host company, institution, or organization: 130 hours.
- Hours allocated to preparing the final internship report: 7.5 hours.
- Hours allocated to interim supervision meetings with the course coordinator: 7.5 hours.
- Employability training (courses offered by the Employability Service or other providers): 5 hours.
Students must attend a minimum of two supervision meetings (either in person or online) during the internship period. The supervisor will record these meetings in an official report. During the second supervision meeting, the student must submit a brief report describing the activities completed up to that point. The academic supervisor will document these meetings in an official record, following the template provided by the Dean's Office.
Submission of the internship report for placements completed during the first semester: by 15 February 2026.

Assessment in Professional Internships I for the Bachelor's Degree in Catalan Philology: Literary and Linguistic Studies is always individual and consists of the following components:
- Host organization supervisor's evaluation, assessing the student's internship performance (65%).
- Final internship report prepared by the student, describing and evaluating the tasks learned and carried out during the placement (25%).
- Employability training (courses offered by the Employability Service or other providers) (10%).
- Supervision meetings with the internship coordinator (a minimum of two) (5%).
To pass the course, students must obtain a minimum final grade of 5 out of 10.
The possible grades for Professional Internships I are:
- Not assessable, if the student has completed less than 10% of the on-site hours established in the internship agreement.
- Fail, if the student has completed more than 10% of the required on-site hours but has not fulfilled the total number of hours established in the internship agreement or has received an unsatisfactory evaluation.
- Honours (Matrícula d'Honor). This distinction will not be awarded due to its discretionary nature and the heterogeneous characteristics of this course across the different degree programmes offered by the Faculty.
Professional Internships I cannot be retaken if the student receives a failing grade.
This course does not provide for a single-assessment system.
If a student commits any irregularity that may significantly affect the grade of an assessment activity, that assessment activity will be graded 0 (zero), without prejudice to any disciplinary proceedings that may be initiated. If multiple irregularities are committed in the assessment activities of the same course, the final grade for the course will be 0 (zero).
