Prerequisites

There are no official prerequisits. However, a basic knowledge of Cell Biology and Histology of tissues is recommended.

Objectives

This is an obligatory subject in the 2n year, concerning the cellular and tissue bases of human organs and systems. It has been designed assuming students have a basic knowledge of Histology and Physiology that will facilitate they acquire a comprehensive understanding and an integrated approach to the organization of human organs.

The subject gives the basic knowledge to undertand the subject of Anatomy of pathology next year.

The main goals of the subject are:


a) Understand the cellular and tissular organization of the different organs and systems of the human body.

b) Recognize and identify at the microscopic level the different organs and systems of the human body.

c) Relate the tissular composition of the organs with their function.

The Systems Histology course includes both lectures and seminars.

Lectures

The theoretical program will be delivered in 38 lectures. These lectures will be supported by audiovisual materials prepared by the teaching staff, which will be available to students on the Virtual Campus.

Seminars

Students will be divided into groups to solve a case study related to a specific topic in the course syllabus, followed by a group discussion. During the seminars, students will also practice histological image recognition with the guidance of the instructor. At the end of each seminar, a test will be administered as part of the course's continuous assessment, as described in the Assessment section.

Tutorials

Tutorials will be conducted on an individual basis in the instructor's office (schedule to be arranged). They are intended to clarify concepts, reinforce the knowledge acquired during the course, and support students in their learning and preparation.

Annotation: within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

The competencies of this course will be assessed through continuous assessment, which includes individual theoretical and practical knowledge tests, as well as group seminar activities.

The assessment system is organized into two independent components, each contributing a specific percentage to the final course grade:

Written Examinations (80% of the final grade)

This component assesses each student's individual knowledge through multiple-choice examinations. Two midterm examinations, each covering part of the course content, will be held during the semester, together with a final resit examination (see the course schedule).

Each midterm examination is divided into three sections: image identification (30%), case-based problem solving (30%), and theoretical knowledge questions (40%). To pass each midterm examination, students must obtain a minimum grade of 5 in each of the three sections; otherwise, they must take the corresponding make-up examination.

Seminars (20% of the final grade)

At the end of each seminar, students will complete a short test assessing their knowledge of the seminar's specific topic.

Passing the Course

To pass the course, students must obtain an overall grade of at least 5 out of 10, calculated from the written examinations and seminar assessments. In addition, students must achieve a minimum grade of 5 out of 10 in both the seminar component and the written examination component.

To be eligible for the resit examination, students must have previously completed assessment activities accounting for at least two-thirds (67%) of the total course grade. Consequently, students whose completed assessment activities represent less than 67% of the final grade will receive the designation "Not Assessed".

Single Assessment

This course also offers a single-assessment option. Students choosing this option will complete a single comprehensive examination on the same date scheduled for the second midterm examination (the final continuous assessment test). If a resit is required, the same assessment format will apply.
