Objectives and Contextualisation
The objectives of the course are basically the following:
- To obtain an updated and plural knowledge base and bibliography on the different demographic, economic, political and institutional issues related to the Monarchy of the Catholic Monarchs.
- To achieve levels of written and oral expression proper to the scientific and university environment.
- To advance in historiographic reflection and criticism based on the specific themes of the subject.
- To encourage participative attitudes in intellectual and scientific work.
- Encourage attitudes of effort and personal respect in intellectual and scientific work.
Competences
- Developing critical thinking and reasoning and communicating them effectively both in your own and other languages.
- Identifying the main historiographical tendencies and critically analysing their development.
- Mastering the basic diachronic and thematic concepts of the historical science.
- Respecting the diversity and plurality of ideas, people and situations.
- Students must be capable of collecting and interpreting relevant data (usually within their area of study) in order to make statements that reflect social, scientific or ethical relevant issues.
- Students must be capable of communicating information, ideas, problems and solutions to both specialised and non-specialised audiences.
- Students must develop the necessary learning skills in order to undertake further training with a high degree of autonomy.
Learning Outcomes
- Critically assessing and solving the specific historiographical problems of Spain's Modern History.
- Critically summarising the main thematic approaches of historiography about Spain in the Modern Period.
- Engaging in debates about historical facts respecting the other participants' opinions.
- Identifying the key issues that define the characteristics of Spain in the Modern Period.
- Identifying the main and secondary ideas and expressing them with linguistic correctness.
- Organising and planning the search of historical information.
- Properly using the specific vocabulary of History.
- Recognising diversity and multiculturalism.
- Solving problems autonomously.
- Submitting works in accordance with both individual and small group demands and personal styles.
- Using the characteristic computing resources of the field of History.
Content
- Introduction. The Catholic Monarchs before historiography.
- The Hispanic kingdoms during the crisis of the late Middle Ages. The bases of Castilian hegemony.
- Difficult beginnings. The dynastic union and the war of Castilian succession.
- Institutions and forms of government of the new Hispanic monarchy.
- Religious policy I: Jews, converts and Mudejars.
- Religious policy II: the origins of the modern Inquisition and the reform of the clergy.
- Social structures and economic dynamics.
- Foreign policy. The origins of Hispanic imperialism.
- The final years of the reign. 1504-1516. Castile without Isabel. Time of regencies.

The teaching methodology will be based on:
1. Theoretical classes with the participation of students.
2. Oral presentations by students.
3. Questionnaire type written tests.
4. Book reviews.
5. Tutorials to supervise the students' autonomous activities.
Annotation: Within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

The evaluation will be carried out on the basis of the following procedures and criteria:
- A written test type questionnaire: 35 %.
- A written test type questionnaire: 35 %.
- A review of a book to choose between three possible: 20%.
- A short exposition (on a text, character or specific event) with the delivery of a written outline: 10%.
The re evaluation will consist of an overall examination of the subject matter of the course and will be held on the date set by the Faculty. Re-evaluation is not a means of improving the grade. The maximum grade that can be obtained in the re-evaluation is 5.0 (Pass).
At the time of completion/delivery of each assessment activity, the teacher will inform (Moodle, SIA) of the procedure and date of revision of the grades.
The student will be classified as Non-evaluable when he has not delivered more than 30% of the evaluation activities.
In the written activities, spelling, syntactic or lexical errors are taken into account. The penalty can be between 0.1-0.2 points on the final grade for each mistake made. Repeated errors can discount.
In the event of a student committing any irregularity that may lead to a significant variation in the grade awarded to an assessment activity, the student will be given a zero for this activity, regardless of any disciplinary process that may take place. In the event of several irregularities in assessment activities of the same subject, the student will be given a zero as the final grade for this subject.
In the event that tests or exams cannot be taken onsite, they will be adapted to an online format made available through the UAB’s virtual tools (original weighting will be maintained). Homework, activities and class participation will be carried out through forums, wikis and/or discussion on Teams, etc. Lecturers will ensure that students are able to access these virtual tools, or will offer them feasible alternatives.
The single assesment wil consist:
1. Synthesis exam: 70%.
2. Two book reviews (choose from tree): 15% + 15%.
